Ih c301 pistons in c263 engine
|
Does anyone out there know if it is possible to turn my farmall 560 gas engine (c263) into a c301 by removing the sleeves in the c263 and putting 301 pistons in it |

The problem is that the sleeves have a counter bore at the top, so you would have to use a sleeve to fill that, then get it all smooth to put the 301 piston in. I would suggest rebuilding it as a 291, as they use sleeves. You will still need to bore the block to get the bigger sleeves in. I would love to get the measurements of the counter bore to see if an oversized piston could be used at that bore. But with custom builds like that, it gets expensive if you can't do it yourself. |

I have a M&W overbore kit that will take a 263 to a 291. I believe it is a set for a lp engine that would up the compression. You would have to bore the block, but it would be a sleeved engine. I would sell the kit, if interested shoot me a email. Also have a lp intake manifold also for sale |

On my block where it is stamped "C 263" the number below it is 24029 and casted in the block just to the right below that is another number 367511R3 |

Depends on the block. The later blocks were all the same. I would have to look the casting number up. |

Also think i located the casting date of 1 19 G indicating built in 1961? |

If I were you I'd just bore it out and put in 301 pistons. Get the biggest overbore (probably 0.030") and put those in. Kurtvtx is right about the counter bore, but all that does is lose you a titch of compression. I built a motor just like what your are doing (I started with a 221 block) and it ran great. With 806 manifolds and carb along with a custom cam it made 90 horse. |

Cheaper route would be to put in chevy 366 big block pistons. Makes it 320was cubes off the bat. I did this a couple years agoand could keep up with the big cube m's. That is though cause we run 2800 or 3000 rpms. |

How close do the 366 pistons run to the counter-bore size? Can the counter-core be left as is? And how much work needs to be done to the piston to fit it in? I was looking at this with my machinist, but he didn't really get what I was saying, and was not interested in custom parts! LOL |

You would still have to bore the block out. I if i remember right the counter bore would be gone. |

What size are 366 pistons? When we ran our 460 we looked into boring it out, but found that if we still wanted to run water in it (comfortably) we could only go out to 3.95". |

They list as 3.935 in stock form. |

Keep in mind you have to change the head. Also, I have done it with c301 pistons & with the Chevy pistons. I only gained 8hp with the Chevy piston over the 301 piston with everything else the same, at stock rpm. If I wasn't looking for all I could get I would go with the 301 piston. A lot less machine work. Like was said the counter bore that is left won't make much difference. People have been doing this since 1958. |
