David P. Schreier, Retired WPI President/CEO, Has Passed
Today, the administration and staff of World Pulling International and the National Tractor Pullers Association mourn the passing on Saturday, December 2 of David P. Schreier, 84, of Tomah, Wisconsin.
Mr. Schreier served the WPI/NTPA organization, first as NTPA Executive Director and later as WPI President and Chief Executive Officer, from 1986 until his retirement in 2019.

Mr. Schreier’s entry into pulling was as both a competitor and a promoter. With his “Green Power Special” John Deere 4320, he won the NTPA’s 1980 Grand National 7,000-lb. Super Stock championship. But prior to that accomplishment, he helped to start two bedrock NTPA events in his home state: the Norwalk Lions Club Pull in his birthplace and the Budweiser Dairyland Super Nationals in Tomah, the hometown of his later life. Persuasive in his arguments that a tractor pull was the kind of activity around which a community could coalesce and from which it could benefit, Mr. Schreier rallied the support to get both events rolling and in the process discovered his gift for leadership.

Mr. Schreier and his recently passed brother Dick owned and operated a John Deere tractor and implement business in Tomah for over 20 years. But having watched the sanctioning organization with which he partnered to present the Tomah event descend toward bankruptcy, he stepped forward in 1986 to form a holding company, World Pulling Incorporated, and raised the funds necessary to settle the NTPA’s debts and provide it with a sustainable business plan. Soon afterward, he moved to Columbus, Ohio with his wife Christine to helm the new WPI/NTPA conglomerate, and he forged corporate alliances with U.S. Tobacco and Chevrolet that funded the sport through the next two decades. Another such agreement developed into a deep and abiding friendship between Wisconsinites Dave and Christine and Californians Kent and Joan Enderle, founders of the Enderle Pull-Off invitational that is now in its 37th year.

As either the Association’s or WPI’s chief executive, Mr. Schreier guided the NTPA into its 50th season. He was inducted into the Pulling Hall of Fame in 2014 alongside his best friend Gardner Stone for both his on- and off-track achievements.

Mr. Schreier is survived by Christine, his wife of 40 years, seven children, 15 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. We will provide funeral information once it has been announced by the family.
