Wider rims

Thinking about widening my rims for a bigger foot print. Is there a such thing as too wide? I run 18.4R38 on one tractor and a 20.8R38 on another they are both Firestone on stock width rims and both sets are cut..my question is as how wide should I make them? Have you guys noticed much difference in grip or am I just wasting time? Thanks for the input |

When I was setting up my farmstock I had the same question. It seems the common thing is to be 2" wider than the tires original rim recommendation, 18.4 on 20" rim, 20.8 on a 22" rim. I went 22" on my 20.8-38 BFG's and am pleased with the outcome, but have had nothing else to compare it to. Some say the BFG likes a stock 20" rim width in my application so who knows really. I do think your firestones will benefit from a wider rim, it seems to lay them our real flat. Good luck. |

Incorrect Redguy Stock 18.4x38 wheel recommendation is 16" and stock 20.8x38 wheels are 18"......... |

So what width of rim do you recommend? For both sizes? |

Thats a preference thing to a lot of people. I prefer stock size to 2” over and no more, it also depends on the type of pulling you do. When I did a couple sets for myself they ended up 19-1/2” -19-3/4” somewhere in there. Took one donor rim and cut both beads off as far in as I could and cut one side of the rim I was going to use and welded it. One weld all the way around. I had a set of 22” rims for 20.8’s and they never would bite, put them on 18” rims and it helped for me…..now you will have other people say otherwise probably but I feel like the side walls get stretched too far if you got beyond stock - +2”. |
