What is the ideal compression ratio for a 466 3x3 3000 rpm tractor? No water or intercooler. Thanks.

12:1

12:1 is too low. 14:1 or higher would be better.

we tried a setup that was 17:1....it was alittle too high....And also hard to start.

Limited single chargers usually like about 15.5-1. Makes a little difference on what pistons you are going to run also.
A hard anodized forged piston will be more forgiving at that cr considering higher inlet temperature and less control of peak cyliner temperature and pressure.
Whereas a cut cast piston would be happier at a little lower cr.

Why was 17:1 "too high"? Did it blow up or just not make power? I run a 3lm class at 2800 rpm and was wondering if a higher compression ratio would improve lugging power.

i've kind of followed this, older dt pistons are 15.2 to 1 the newer are 16.5 to 1. Both stock.

The trouble i had with the newer style is the oil ring is small and they tend to score unlike the older style. i run a 466 3x2.95 holset. 750cc of fuel on a ppump. i use no water as i can cool with fuel.

12to1 and 13to1 are 4.3bore ,hypermax sells them. I've seen alot of combinations hypermax 540 kit with the lower 12.1 and stock head runs the same as a 15.2 to 1 stock dt466. The only thing i could see with the 540 having both engines is the 540 will push the charger a little harder at the end. So we shrunk the ex housing on the dt and intake wheel and went by the 540.
I thinks it's a wash between the 2 until you over size valves cam ext.
