sbjd 640 build project September 24, 2011 04:05AM
I have both an older 466 block and an 8.1. Witch should I start with? Is there a difference in the crank centerline to top deck height? No deck plates for us. What crank? What rods? Is it worth it to use an IH or Cummins crank? This is for a 1000+ hp 3000 rpm class. TIA

I would use the 8.1 crank its a heavier crank, won't break as easy. I would use the stock rods and just get them hardend.

Any more ideas out there. There's lots of ways to skin the cat. I need help weighing the pros and cons of each.

How much money you got or are you on a budget

Re: sbjd 640 build project September 25, 2011 04:13AM
Ya that's always the rub. I have always tried to do things right the first time but I don't drive a Cadillac. For this class I wouldn't think we need the #1 plan (all billet) but with 2 cracked welded cranks so far I'm ready to go back to the drawing board.

Re: sbjd 640 build project September 25, 2011 11:38AM
I would get bullet pistons, harden the rods, and use the 8.1 with a 55 head.

What is the maximum stroke that can be run on a 466 without a deck plate? With a deck plate?

Re: sbjd 640 build project September 25, 2011 12:38PM
That kind of comes back to my question on crank center to deck height. Is an 8.1 taller allowing either more stroke or a longer rod?

Re: sbjd 640 build project September 25, 2011 01:02PM
The 8.1L is NOT taller then a 466 and the rods are the same c to c. The piston CD is different.

Do you have a special number to get ahold of Brent? I have tried to deal with him before and takes WEEKS to get ahold of him or a call back. I will say his parts are top of the line but he needs to address the phone issues. Riverside always answers the phone!

I'll second that statement

I realize all posts here need to be taken with a grain of salt but once in a while there is a good technical discussion on some aspect of pulling on here. To bad its so infrequent. I like most of the threads on here but I wish some of these people would just text, e-mail or call each other so they don't clutter up the site. Seems a lot of those people are from Wisconsin (so am I).

soo.. yer from Wisconsin what org you want to pull with

Just my opinion but if I were building a Deere here in WI, I'd be on the phone to Lemke's.

I have a idea for you. Build a 466 put a open rpm pump on it and come pull with us Gene!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this the 3000 RPM class that allows the use of alternative fuels in your water?

Not trying to highjack your thread, but I'm curious about something. I'm comfortable with SF dyno numbers that are thrown around. My question is how can a 3000rpm 640 tractor get to 1000HP. 3000 classes don't exist here. Is it that SFs are in their HP max band at 3000 or less (so you're essentially building a SF engine with the governor still hooked up), or are your rules permitting something with fuel/turbo/intercooler I'm not aware of.

Don't take this post and start a war, please. I just want to learn where it's all at.

Thanks,

CPR

im interested too...

Re: sbjd 640 build project September 27, 2011 12:50PM
the badger class allows single port water (water only). you can have an intercooler and they allow 3X4 charger. so with a 640 motor it is actually a super farm tractor on an rpm limit. it is a great profarm class to watch with some color in it big power and a high speed.

Re: sbjd 640 build project September 27, 2011 12:50PM
From what I am told (you always have to wonder) the BSTP Pro Farm class with a smooth cover 3x4 turbo and a cooler are running 1300 HP or so. The SF guys that I know are at peak torque and HP at 24-2600 rpm. These guys are NTPA rules and often get kicked when they pull together. RPM helps but I think It's most important in lower cube classes or at a higher level of competition.

Re: sbjd 640 build project September 29, 2011 10:18AM
BSTP 640 pro farm is 3x3.6 smooth,a 466 can run slots, all have intercooler, one water port, most are 1150 to1250? hp maybe more, 3000rpm. the slotted charger gives SF more power.Central ILL runs same rules with asalotted charger they run 100 to 150 hp more
