Old fire trucks, including FWD, keep a eye on ebay motor's and the used fire truck online dealers.

Just to stir the pot, why is a 501 inline 6, ok in hot farm, and yet a IH 345 V8, off a IH combine or a IH 549 V8 stationary engine, would put the tractor in the Mod class?

Most clubs say you sheet metal and engine configuration must match. So a v 8 has to use 1468 or 1568 sheet metal. And must meet cu in rule.

372, 406, 450 & 501 are the same block. Yes, used in the 50's & 60's "R" series heavy duty gas trucks, that were very popular. The engine line was discontinued by about the mid 70's (Fleetstar & Fleetstar A series trucks), as I recall, due to EPA regs (no lead gas) and everyone switching to V-8's and the new advent of mid size (DV 550 & DT 466) diesels for these trucks.

They will bolt in the same but crank and cam gear sets are different between the engines. 501 doesn't have sleeves and the others do.
the crank location in the blocks are different for the larger stroke.450 to 501 the bore and stroke are bigger. There is an early and late block and head. Different water pumps between them and different head gasket kits. How to tell what your getting on left side of block just below head gasket between dist. and front of the block is a spot that should read RD 501. Onother way is get the casting # of the crank shaft i think between #1 rod and #2 main journal. or with head off check for sleeves and measure the bore.Should be 4.500" is what i remember. Consider this I=if you are going to build a limited rpm class engine with big cubes then RD 450 would be fine. If you are building and open class high rpm engine the RD 501 would be the better choice. I have the mountin kits to install the RD engines,ta delete shaft ,fast constant mesh gear sets, and clutches. Floyd Isbell 570 637-1311 [customtractorparts.com]

Why run alcohol when u can run VP race fuel for compression up to 16:1. No advantage other than you can mix a lot of different additives to it to make power.

Re: RD 501 November 16, 2011 02:48PM
Floyd, what's the maximum cubes the 501 will support? What are the tricks to do it? Thanks.

I have not done a lot to the RD 501 and 450 engines. I have sold a lot of installation kits and the largest cid i heard was 780. Keep in mind the bigger you go the slower normally they turn less rpms.
