Putting 4 3/4 bore in a John Deere 466 February 04, 2012 09:05AM
What are the best pistons to use on a budget? Heard you could use John Deere 531 pistons but was wondering what style of piston, N/A or Turbo, I should get and if modifications are needed to work. Thanks for the help.

several suppliers make a drop-in kit (sleeves, pistons, rings), that would probably be the best way to go. Ck with Lemke, riverside, gms.

Im looking more for if 531 pistons will work. Can anybody tell me the measurements from the center of the piston pin to the top of the piston on a 531 turbo piston?

531 non turbo (small pin) will work with a lot of machining, but if you make any HP you will split them through the top of the pin completely through the top of the piston. You will hear a distinct "thump", and a bad miss, and trash all through the motor. Get a kit (no boring needed) from GMS and be done with it.

does this make 505? If so is it a good set up? and by drop in does this mean just changing sleaves no boring?

Yes it makes 505. May have to open up the counter bore in the block for the top of the sleeve, don't know if you are going to use a stock head gasket, wire rings or c-rings to hold the compression in, that determines the counter bore diameter of the sleeve. As far as set up goes it depends on what you are building.

I have used Gms pistons and used liners both in good shape for sale. call me Davey 301 992 4885.
