Allis Chalmers / Detroit 40 Series January 11, 2009 04:01PM
Point of reference on the Allis Chalmers being able to use a Detroit Series block, as per information originally provided on the few, proud the orange, and document by Nebraska test No. 1692 and 1700, both 466 cu in and 531 cu in detriot series 40 engines were in the test tractors sent to the testing grounds, Agco Allis models 9695 and model 9635. Per the orange website, Navistar had the contract, couldn't meet the deadline for the original delivery date and 1500 detriot series 40's got shipped to start the line. Per the owners of the Hurricane Allis, whom run the motor in their pro-stock, the block and head, as well as crank, is different than the ih/navistar. The ih400 head, as I recall will bolt on, but the crank has somewhat larger mains and their is some visual differences, in both the exterior of the head and block, of the detroit, compared to the ih or navistar. Elvin is very pleased with the strength of the block in his 671 cu in setup, with the class standards of billet crank and head. Of course, the 374 cu/585 cu in deutz, 505 cummings and navistar engines were also installed in similiar sized models, in the approximate time frame, per tractordata.com.
