Question for massey people!

Investigating the perkins 318 to run in LLSS, rear on the 1080 and 1085 are too weak for me. cannot run a component, what rear can the 318 bolt to without too much trouble? or are there options with the 1085 to make it stronger?

My understanding from Massey people is to stay away from the 318 to many crank issues. As for rearends maybe the 1105 would be a better choice. I have used the 44 mh and had an 1100 rear. Maybe look into the Valmet/sisu motor or contact the fellow in wisconsin with the 1850 for 354 advice or if going alky talk to the Prewitt boys in Shelbyville ky they have got that perkins humming. |

I would definitely worry more about the 318 than the rear end....it doesn't do that well in it's stock form..... |

what i am looking at doing is a llss but to run 2 turbos, you have to be under 315 +/- 1% and the 318 fits that perfectly. is it even worth trying ? i do not want to run alky for my love of diesel. is it possible to build the 318 to what i need? |

before ya build that
|
Think about this. After 1 run that cubic inch could be 319 in your motor. Then you would be illegal. |

If you are going to decube, would the 1000 series perkins be a better choice ie better head flow, stronger crank etc |

I don't think you can make that head flow any significant numbers. Ole George, if I remember correct, spoke to the boys that have a 318 super stock massey in England(?) Nipper, and they run billet rods, three chargers and were around 1300hp plus---but lots of machine work, maybe a billet head. I like the idea of a 4 cylinder diesel llss, but the Genesis 304 ford in a 5000 chassis would be starting with a better foundation (air flow, individual ports, parts availability for motor and drive train) than the 318. Additionally, you'd have to probably do something with the mechanical balancer on the 318, similiar to the one on the 276 deere, to get the motor to turn significant rpms. Ted and Tony Dibble, have proven a 4 cylinder can be made to be competitive in the class, on alcohol, but their head has enough material to allow them to put major hours in modifications to the original design. The 336 moline 4 cylinder could be decubed, to run twin charges, and it's related to the massey line now, if your die in the woods set on a massey---best of luck. |

You can use a 302 out of a 400MF combine I think there the same engine but with sleeves. I run a 302NA 120hp with nothing done to the inside. |

Yes it is diesel. I dont know how strong the crank is I only run 2200rpms no turbo. It has a CAV pump some guys say there junk but it works well for what I do. You can put these engines in MF1085s, MF Super90s, and Cockshutt 40PDs. The Cockshutt 40 has a strong tranny and rearend that might hold up to 1000hp. Edited 1 time(s). Mark there is a fellow here that has one in a 180 he badged it a 1080. It was ran n/a for years and don't believe he had many problems, it currently has one to4 charger but he hasn't pulled for at least 3 years maybe 5 time gets away. I don't know how much maintenance is required but having talked with guys who ran one they stuck with the 236 and still had issues. Heck try it, if you blow it to smithereens you can always go to a sisu. |
