Ford 7840 build questions for the blue guys??? March 16, 2012 07:48AM
I have my eye on a 7840 ford tractor, I have done some research and found that they are 401 non turbo, however..... is it possible to put in a 456 turbo engine, and call it a 8340? I would be pulling an enhanced farm class with it. does a 7840 compare to a 8340 in looks and size? also what type of injection pump did a 8340 come with factory? also are they a gear trans? or powershift? will the trans take horsepower or will it break easily? is there room enough in the bell housing for a bigger clutch? thanks for the help i wanted to find some answers before I commited to the tractor. thanks again.

Here is the Information from Tractordata.com Click on the numbers below it brings up the tractors and the specs. click around on each page, you should find out some of the answers your looking for. I know the main image is 4x4 but you can kinda get an idea what it should look like.

7840

8340

Don't for get about the 474 (7.8L) ford truck motor that some organization allow you to swap in the stock class.

Thanks,
Justin

The 456 out of a 8340 is a direct bolt in and has a rotory pump so stock core pump would have its limitations. The 474 will go in but it is a lot of work, differant flywheel, balancer and alot taller.

7840 and 8340 same chassis different engine. A 7840 with a 456 turbo and rotory injection pump is an 8340. Just change the decal on the nose where the # is.

As stated the 456 from an 8340 will bolt in. But so will any other 456 with some parts changing that would normally be done anyways. Larger HP 456 engines have 8 bolt crank shafts Vs. the six in the 7840 but you would want to ditch the stock clutch anyways. I can get you a 2 or 3 dics clutch that will bolt in with almost no modifications. The rotoray pump can be changed to a inline pump with a few parts I have. A Wimer Simms pump would be very good in a enhanced farm class and is a stock core pump for a Ford. There were 3 different trannys offered standard 8 speed a syncro 8 speed ( I think ) and a 16 speed power shift. The standard 8 will hold up fine as for the other 2, I cannot say either way.

The blocks are the same in a 7840 and 82-8340 the crank and pistons are different. The pump is a dps cav injection pump. The tractor was available with 5 transmissions, 8x2 and 16x4 non synchro a 12x12 and 24x24 synchronized trans and a 16x16 semi powershift. they are all should work good for pulling with the exception of the 16x16 semi powershift and the later 24x24 transmissions they use a wet clutch. If your stuck with a stock pump class get a 7810 they have a 401 with a simms pump.
