JD4430 power steering question April 01, 2012 01:43PM
I'm thinking about building/buying a light weight front end for my JD4430. I can't decide if i should stay with power steering or go manual.
If i go manual, can i just cap the lines going to the hand pump?
If i stay with power steerting, can i use the hand pump from an early 4430 or a combine? (mine four lines).

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure what would all have to be done to keep the hyd. power steering setup. On mine we removed the old steering parts and capped off the old supply lines and ran rods and knuckles to the front. SIMPLE

Hope this helps

If you have the old 4020 style steering valve on your 4430 the one that takes just 2 lines you can use them to run a double acting cylinder.

My 4430 is a later one. So if I get a steering moter from a 4020 would it by chance bolt up to my current brackets? Is it the same thing as a early 4430?

They are similar but I think maybe a little diffrent since the 30's are set up for a tilt steering wheel. Functionaly a 20 series valve would work but you might have to do some custom brackets to make it fit.

At that point you might as well just look for a hydrostatic setup.. Used in the utility tractors, combines and other manufactures.. Unless u can find an early model being parted out for cheap...

Does one off a 4020 have the same number of lines going to the steering valve as a 4430

It uses 2 lines out to the front just like an early4430, or even a 6030 for that matter, which already uses steering cylinders as opposed to a steering motor.

Will a steering pump from a combine work just as well as one from a 4020?

They function totaly diffrent. A 4020 is closed center hydraulics (constant pressure variable flow) a combine is open center (constant flow variable pressure).

I am putting a light front end under a 4430 if I remove the main hydralic pump and front steering moter can I still use the old style box under the dash to steer a daul acting cylinder if so what will feed the steering box under the the dash.
