oliver 1850/white questions ? May 31, 2012 12:47PM
How light can you get a oliver 1850/white still using the factory cast tub ? And what are there for motor swap choices outside of a cummins ??

Re: oliver 1850/white 120 questions ? May 31, 2012 03:04PM
A 1655 will make 5500, so assuming an 1850 is about the same as a 1755 or 1855, I'm guessing you could make 7500 if you take out the hydraulics, convert to manual steering or rig up a self contained power steering unit. This is in addition to the obvious lightening tactics like pressed steel rims, and taking the fenders off or finding lighter alternatives such as aluminum ones with lighter mounts. It's probably more on that model, but the cast iron piece that the dash supports (also cast iron) mount on weighs 45 lbs. on a 1655, so I'm guessing the 1850 one might be closer to 60 lbs. If this is a big horsepower puller, you might as well fabricate an all new dash since the stock throttle linkage won't be of concern with a dead man throttle. I know those cast iron dash supports are heavy too. Don't forget about the pedals, there's some serious meat in there too.

Like I said, a 1655 (narrow front, pressed steel 18.4x38s, wodden grille, manual steering) will make 5500, with about 100 to spare. WIth a little more work, it could loose another 100 or even 200 with more aluminum and still have the stock tub.

7500 would be nice. Does anyone know if a 8.3 cummins can be shoehorned in ?

I'm not sure, but I suspect that is the route that this puller did. Judging by the grille, I think they took a 2-105 and stuck an 8.3 in it and called it a 160 White. He's on this forum once in a while, I think he goes by the handle of hogtown puller. His Youtube username is 7172duster.

I would think the 2150 or white 135 tub would work better for the 8.3, it might fit in the 105/1850 tub but it would be full. 7k or so would be maybe the lowest it would go with the factory tub. There is the 3208, 478 hercules or the perkins but for tractor pulling the cummins has to be the easiest and have the most availability of aftermarket parts.

from the dimensions I find online a 8.3 is 4 inches longer and 5 inches taller than a 5.9. Im not sure how much room there is left with a 5.9 swapped into a 1850/105.

I put an 8.3 Cummins in a 2150 and it fit very nicely.
This is last years pulling season, I put a new clutch in this past winter.
First time out...scared myself. Can't wait to go pullin.
