hauling two tractors July 18, 2012 06:53AM
Just thinking out loud here, but I have a question. Has anyone ever had any F550 type of rig they used to haul two tractors on a gooseneck. We have a semi, but sometimes it would be nice to take a crew cab with 4 guys put two tractors on the trailer and sit back and ride. Questions are with a semi, we never worry about tires or the motor or the load and have plenty of power. So is there a pickup on steroids out there that would work?

How about something like a mid-sized truck, like an IH 4900 or something along those lines? Actual truck brakes on them to keep a bigger load slowed down when necessary.

I've got a Kodiac 6500 works perfect, turns short and has Huge Disc Brakes all around. C-7 Cat 12 mpg loaded.

How heavy are the tractors? How heavy is the trailer? Do you intend to pull any hills or is it just flatland? If you are pullihng two 7,000# tractors on a 6,000# trailer a 3500-5500 size truck will work fine on the flat. IMHO

I can remember way back when my dad and friends would load up 4 tractors (narrow fronts) on a gooseneck pulled by an old C30 and a 327 if I remember right. I always got put in the middle and my knees banged by the shifter.

8200 and 6400

A 1ton of any brand would handle that if your trailer is good for it.

Your nuts haulin two tractors on a gooseneck with a one ton or even a two ton...dot has figured out those rigs are a cash cow and will pick on you til you go back to a semi...get a semi with a couch if the buddy's want to ride along..

On the maiden voyage with my new '08 F350 back in late '07, I had about 19,000 on the trailer from MN back to central IL. That's 3 trailers ago, now have a 40' PJ hydraulic tail, and it has two tractors on it right now. I just sold my drop deck semi trailer that I pulled with a single axle Freightliner- the wife won't ride in it, so I went back to the pickup. I'll use the Freightliner on the gooseneck when she doesn't go along. The pickup handles it fine, but I'm sure it's not the best idea. My trailer has 12k axles with 12x6 brakes, so it should stop it's own load. Safety isn't a concern if the tires and brakes are in good shape, but the DOT probably wouldn't be happy. Most of the pulls I attend are within 80 miles of home, and I avoid the interstates when I can. No problems for the last 6 years. The pickup is sure a lot more comfortable to drive.

The tractors weigh 10500 and 9500. I could leave a few weights at home and move them from one to the next. We live in the hills also.

I doubt that your trailer is rated heavy enough for 20,000 lbs. Remember, the GVW rating for the trailer includes the weight of the trailer, so with 20,000 on it you're probably pushing 26-27,000 lbs. DOT will check it, and will happily relieve you of your cash.
