401 to 456ford August 08, 2012 07:07AM
I,m changing from 401 to 456 ford, using same pump and turbo, hot farm ,should I increase fuel and can I increase to next gear?456 head on 401 is suppose to improve 401. wondering how much improvement whole motor will be . thanks

Re: 401 to 456ford August 08, 2012 07:42AM
need a little more information, what pump and turbo are you running, what gear are you running now, what weight, any head work or cam

Re: 401 to 456ford August 08, 2012 10:38AM
both motors still stock inside , wanted to build 456 instead of 401, plan on cam, head work ,maybe 540 ,next year, pump is 12mm wimer with there injectors, turbo is 2.7x3, 401 could only run 5th gear in 10000 lbs, thought should,of run better, curious if 456 is going to run much better, any help would be much appreciated , thanks 3200 rpms

Re: 401 to 456ford August 08, 2012 02:18PM
Assuming you're running a 9700 with DP, I think you'll turn 8'th but may have to hit DP at end. My 9600 with s300 and 12simms will do this at 10k.

Re: 401 to 456ford August 09, 2012 12:43AM
with a stock 456 and the 12mm pump you should be able to run 7th easy, 8th would be depending on track. with a cam, a little head work, water injection it should run 8th

Re: 401 to 456ford August 09, 2012 03:37PM
that seems like a big improvement, Is 456 that much better, where should I start timing 30 degrees ? and should I increase fuel. thanks Travis would you have phone # or email I would like to talk to you.

Re: 401 to 456ford August 09, 2012 04:16PM
You wont find a better person to work with. Travis bulit my 9600 ford and it runs great with alot left in it. And Im still running the 401 block with a 2.3 turbo and it will run 6 gear all day long and 7 gear on some tracks

502-252-9230 days 502-252-0965 nights and weekends

Re: 401 to 456ford August 10, 2012 01:21AM
A good 401 with genesis head can easily run 8th with a dual power at 10,000.

Re: 401 to 456ford August 10, 2012 04:07AM
I have a 401 with 7.8 truck head cam injectors and open rpm pump only problem is it is very hard to start has no power smokes like crazy and can not ever get it to lite charger even put small turbo on from 4440 deere and it evend didnt wanna turn that could i be a turn out on timing or would you say my pump is bad i bought it used

Re: 401 to 456ford August 10, 2012 06:02AM
my 401 would run 7th all day long with no dp, now i run 8th with 456 and spin out at the end. 9500, 3000 rpms. Call prairie performance, he knows his fords!

Re: 401 to 456ford August 10, 2012 07:02AM
i dont understand any of this?? there are 6 fords in southern indiana that run in the mph classes and have everything that u guys are talking about, good pump, nice turbos, heads, 456 cubes, and even bigger cubes in some of them, cams, and they are struggling to spin out in 7th low. 9 times out of ten they will choke it off in a 12 mph class. my question is, how much weight are u guys pulling in ur sleds?? why is it that u claim to spin out in 7th hi and 8th low, but these guys cant hardly handle 6th hi? is it in the sled settings u think? or are they not doing something right with their 456 engines to make them run? im pretty sure they all run a 2 3/4 X 3 charger with water injection or somewheres close to that size charger. any info is much appreciated. thank you

Re: 401 to 456ford August 10, 2012 07:53AM
Dont know whether it is cause they pull mph or not. Or they dont have the right person turning wrenches. Like I said im running a 401 block with a good gensis head pretty good pump smaller than most of those guys and a 2.3 turbo and it will spin out all day long in 6th at 11000 and 13000lbs. And will run 7th on some tracks but it will get under the turbo. All of this is also at 2600 rpms. Dont know what it will do running in a mph class.

Re: 401 to 456ford August 10, 2012 02:05PM
what oil pan do i use to install 456 in 8000, 456 out of 8010, took pan off to switch to 8000 pan and oil pickup is different ,do I have to change or modify tube,or use different pan . to late to call someone , Hope I can get to run 7th or 8th, I,m sure I,ll need more help, thanks

Re: 401 to 456ford August 11, 2012 09:56AM
Use a stamped steel pan. You'll be fine without cast pan at that weight. You will have to grind some metal from the front bolster. I know a 8670 pan will work.

Re: 401 to 456ford August 11, 2012 11:53AM
I ran my 8000 with 401 and genisis head, 9.5mm simms, 2.5 turbo and no water in 14000 w/2600rpm limit and spun out 6th hi. I run 7th at 3000rpm in 12000 and under and have not ran out of power yet. When I used to run the stock head and 2.3 turbo I would run 6th all the time and only got under the turbo a time or two at 13000. On the other hand I have a genesis in a 9700 and cant get it to run for Sh*t.

Some nice comments about the fords southern indiana puller. Seems you are consistent on your comments through the years. You seem to know alot about them. Although hard to figure out what color tractor you run. I would guess green by the way they finished at jasper in the mph classes. Keep up the good work Travis Gordon and 9700 ford. Have enjoyed and taken in both your comments. Sorry your thread had to be hijacked like this but just wanted to put my two cents in.

Re: 401 to 456ford August 13, 2012 02:26AM
if im not mistaken, goose graves won both classes by a mile stone at jasper sat eve!!! and last i checked a 1466 is red!! unless im colored blind???? my hat is off to goose graves on winning both classes and doing it legally and making it look sweet! so if your asking what color i am, i am caucasion, but i love them red tractors! forever red dude! sounds to me like your a blue fan? not hard to pick you out at a tractor pull beings there are only a few fans of the fords in indiana.

Re: 401 to 456ford August 13, 2012 02:53PM
there were fords won in both mph classes one, second one fourth and 5 spot out of 34 tractors thats not too bad

Re: 401 to 456ford August 13, 2012 02:56PM
Was it Dennis with his 9700 that won.

Re: 401 to 456ford August 13, 2012 03:09PM

Re: 401 to 456ford August 30, 2019 01:33PM
Hopefully you can pick my Ford loving ass out at a tractor pull. And then go sit on the other side.

Re: 401 to 456ford August 30, 2019 11:46AM
I ran in 6th with a worn out 401. With dual power, 3000 rpm, stock injectors, 466 3lm turbo, stock pump but with button pushed
