3LM 466 charger August 26, 2012 02:10AM
We have a new class in our area. The rule says 3LM 466 out of box turbo. I pulled antiques for many years and I would like to pull this class. What is the best turbo for this class? How big of inlet, outlet, and wheel do I need? Thanks for any help.

If it says out of box you really don't have much choice. 2.3 intake. Thats what IAMO and West Central Iowa have for a class, 3lm and 3000 rpm.

you can get them at any diesel parts shop for 6-700 bucks they are direct replacement on most stock stuff (like a T04) and thats all you can do if rules say out of box

There are some trick "out of the box" 3lm turbos out there. You just have to find someone willing to talk about where they got theirs! or had it still look stock and customized. If there is a "claimer rule" there are still options. Out of what box? Hyper sells one!

West Central takes it apart, checks it, measures everything, and seals it.

I'm all for trying to get an edge on the competition, but if the rule says "out of the box 3LM-466", then that's what it means. Any modification makes it illegal, and an illegal part constitutes cheating. Period.

Nothing else needs to be said, thats why rules are "out of Box".

I hope for your clubs sake that someone knows how to tech those turbo's. IF they all get inspected and none are "special" out of box units your pulling will be much more fun IMHO.. The last thing you need is some ringer cleaning up on everyone because he has spent $5000 on a modified "out of box" turbo.. When this happens then the sport gets really expensive.

I am not trying to cheat as you say. I am not thinking that. I just wanted to know what my options are. I did not realize that all turbos was the same for all the different makers. I did not want to buy a turbo then be 100 hp short from everybody else because of a known trick. Thanks for the help fellas

Re: 3LM 466 charger August 26, 2012 03:16PM
A box stock 3lm466 is brand and model specific, with no factory options.

Re: 3LM 466 charger August 27, 2012 02:42AM
If your club inspects your turbos and ENFORCES the rule as it is written and intended and you are 100 hp short, it won't be the fault of the turbo. That said, there are tons of things that can be done, but I have seen many modified 3LM's that didn't perform as well or last as long as a stock one.

Turbo will last, no prob there. Need a little more info like pump, tractor model etc. If your building now save yourself a headache down the road and firering now.

On a properly tuned engine, it should last until the bearings and seals wear out. I have one on a 1466 that pulled for four seasons and over 200 hooks. Put the tractor back to work on the farm several years and hours ago and still haven't touched the turbo. To fire ring or not is really a matter of how much power you are going to make, but if the engine is apart anyway, there's no way I'd put it back together without doing so.
