Ohio/In NA SS vs IPA Outlaw tractors: What's the difference? August 29, 2012 03:47PM
What are the rule differences between the naturally aspirated super stocks that run in Eastern Indiana and Ohio, and the Outlaw IPA class? Both run at 6500 lbs. Looks on video like the In/Oh tractors are hotter.

Any experts out there who can clarify what the rule differences are?

I don't know a whole lot about the IPA tractors but I think those are the ones with a 3000 rpm limit. The IN/OH (Tri-State) tractor rules are basicly 450 ci and over has to run updraft carb, no RPM and can run gas, alcohol, etc. 450ci and under rules are the same except they can run fuel injection.

The IPA web site indicates the 6500 Outlaw NA tractors go down the track around 15 mph. Their rules are here: [www.illianapullers.com] It is difficult to compare one group to another when they are pulling in different states and not pulling the same sled or on the exact same track. That said the Tri-State NA class (part of COTPA) usually runs between 20 and 23 mph depending on track conditions and sled settings. They also run unlimited rpms which make them seem even faster on the video. They have several who run well into the 6000 rpm range with one or two guys who hit 7000 once in a while. Their condensed rules can be found here: [coatpa.com]

Both groups are fun to watch and very competitive. I will say that Tri-State NAs appear to be a little more diverse on their brands, but are lower in total numbers compared to IPA NAs.

The IPA Outlaw class is closer to 17-18 mph for the NA tractors and over 20 for the tractors running under the turbo rules. It is a very competitive class and has good numbers for just finishing its 3rd year.
