IH 466 vs. 540
|
i was wanting to put a tractor together but didn't know which way to go on the motor. rules are 540 max cubes, open rpm 3x3.5 turbo, 20.8 cuts, 8500 and 10000 lbs. didn't know if the extra money for the 540 would be worth it or to stick with the 466 and see if it will compete. |

Without a doubt put together a Hypermax 540. You will crush a 466. 540s love open rpms. With that size turbo, 20.8s and those weights you should be able to run some pretty good rpms. I would never say you can not make a 466 run very well, but there is no replacement for displacement. 20 years ago we ran a class like that and the 540s were way ahead of the 466s. |

The old N/A big block Phrase " there is not replacement for displacement" is soooo old. That does not apply to all classes or combinations. So Black Bart what you are saying is. A 540 no matter what kinda junk turbo or pump it has on it will beat a 466 all day that have good fuel and air? 20 years ago there where stock turbos and not very good pumps and injectors. Things have come along way! |

If you have the 466 together I would run 466 and put your money into good fuel system and turbo. If motor is not together I would go 540. Light class a 466 will do good the heavier class is where the 540 will show. just my opinion. |

MORE TORQUE WITH 540 BUT NOT MUCH MORE HP.MAYBE 1/2 HP PER CUBIC INCH. |

my thoughts were that if there are guys running 4.1, 4.3, and 4.5" chargers on 540 cubic inch light pro stocks then there is no way that any 3" charger is filling the cylinder with air on a 540ci let alone even a 466ci motor. my thinking was that the 540ci was wasted cubes. unless it is making more torque. |

How about 466 vs 540, 3000rpm, 11000 lbs, no water, rotary pump , farm stock ? 540 by 20 feet now thanks |

I have a good start to a 540 I would let go cheap.

A 3 inch charger fills a 640ci super farm well enough to make decent horsepower and tremendous torque. |

If you have the choice go 540. It's a no brainer. Then you will never say you wish you had because that's exactly what you will say. If you can make a 466 run like a 540 with a good turbo and fuel system then you can make a 540 run like a 600 with good air and fuel. |

It also depends on the type of tracks you would be pulling on. If you are pulling predominantly sandy tracks you can get away with 466, but if you are pulling on heavy clay tracks like what we have in Michigan you will want the extra cubes. You won't need the cubes at the starting line but come the end of the run you will appreciate them. |
