What size tubing is usually used to build a tube frame for a tractor? Do they usually use dom tubing or the cheaper electric welded tubing?

probably depends somewhat on the application. As a rule quality builders use quality productsWinking

Dom or Chromolly avoid ERW as its week point is the seam.

Most frame rails 2" Dia 0.095-0.125 wall. Cross braces 1-1/2". .

That's my guess others might have different opinions. Winking

Thanks for the replies guys. So if I used 2" .125 wall dom for the the top and bottom rail, what size tubing for the angled pieces that get fishmouthed to form the ladder work. And what angle do these get installed at? I am assuming 45 degrees and use 1 3/4" tube.

Are u the same guy that asked how big 3 x 3 turbo is?

Re: tube frame October 20, 2012 12:55AM
every thing depends on how far apart the top and bottom tubes are, how many places along the length you tie it into the bell housing,engine,etc.etc. using 1.75 tube for the the diagonals will add up in weight quite quickly. have seen frames with a multi hole flat plate at the front and back stations of the engine-you have to attach there any ways! you may as well do what most "inventors" do, look at others and take the best ideas back to your own shop! excuse my ramblings and good luck!

Thanks for another great reply. I know that Robert Alves suggested that you can use 1 1/2" tubing for the cross braces but I wasn't sure if by "cross braces" he was refering to the tubes that go across the tractor from one frame rail to the other or the diagonals. I would rather use 1 1/2 tubing for the diagonals if that would be sufficient.

In my opinion 1-1/2" would be more than enough. Sorry I should have called them diagonals that's what I meant. If using Chromolly you could keep the wall thickness closer to 0.095" . I think if you look you will find near the rear smaller dia tubing.

What class are we talking about? 6000 to 12000 would make a difference on what kind of steel.

This would be for a 4020 on a super farm tractor.
