optimum rim width for 18.4x38 radial October 21, 2012 12:48PM
Asking for thoughts and/or experience on optimum rim width for this size tire, tractor weighing from 8000lb to 10000lb. Would it make a difference if tires are cut or uncut on rim width?

from the looking around ive done, the consensus seems to be 18 to 20". on radials id probably go for 20"

How can it hurt you ? Seems many would suggest 2 inches over the tire size.

Many would suggest 2 in. over recomended rim width.
Example 18.4-38 calls for 16in wide so go with 18
20.8-38 calls for 18in so go with 20
understand now?

Basic I understand but many I have talked to run and like a wider rim. 20 in rim on 18 in tire and 22 in rim on a 20 in tire.

Big block deere probably has it right , depends on the tire.

Big block I appreciate the desire to see the radial flex but flexing too much would lower hitch height. I suppose if you are "hauling a$$" hitch height isn't all that important.

When you mount a tire on too wide of a rim you also run into problems trying to get the beads all the way out..

It depends a lot the brand of tire. 18 inch rims would work the best for a Firestone but for the BFG radials that are taller 19 or 20's would be best. Radials need to flex and having to wide of a rim doesn't allow then to work correctly. I like to see the outside edge or the tread right under the bead of the rim on a radial.

What about a bias tire?
