Cummins 12V October 24, 2012 06:08AM
I was wondering what is the best year for blocks and best head combo for the Cummins 5.9 12 Valve.

I am looking for a good block ,crank and head for an alky combination the rest of the motor doesn't matter.

Any help would be appreciated.

A block you want to stay away from is a "53" block. Most 53 stamped blocks were in the 24 valve configurations, but i have heard of some 53 12 valves. The 53 block is prone to cracking.

Ran a 53 85 hooks going to bore it out and run it some more were they crack wont hurt them outside the block and nobody runs water mines full of fiberglass resin 270 566 2901 if you wont to call

glad to hear you have had such good luck with your 53 block. If i were out looking for a block to buy, I would still stay away from it. Why buy something that is prone to cracking the water jacket? If it will crack the water jacket horizontally near the oil pan, it will crack in other places, possibly places you cannot visually see.

No differences for what you are going to do.. Injection pump and flex plate vs flywheel.. Heat exchanger for the trans..

Might be a silly question but I was offered a 1994 5.9 out of a pickup this morning with an automatic transmission.

I want the motor only plan on running a crower clutch. Is there any difference in the 5.9 automatic and 5.9 manual transmission crank.

Id be looking for a 53 block. Your gonna fill it any way, simple minded people who kno it all !

Re: Cummins 12V October 27, 2012 01:08PM
i no enough i pull with tractors that have more monney in there wheels tires and sheetmetal than i have in my whole tractor and ive got 3rd in points 3 years strait smart $$$$ i dont no it all but a 53 block cracks on the out side of the block along the water jacket hard block wont leak and my fiberglass aint never leaked

Re: Cummins 12V October 27, 2012 10:17AM
Filled or not, the 53 is often still a weak block. Not all of them are but why play the odds on a high hp build.
The best block to build from is the ag block (often marked with a 56) it weighs in the neighborhood of 30-40 lbs more than a standard block. Beyond that, a 6.7 common rail truck block with a deck plate and pressed in sleeves is pretty much the best setup.
I am not a simple minded know it all, I speak from experience.

I'm not referring to water leaking from a crack between along the freeze plug area.
I can show you plenty of pictures of 5.9 blocks with the top and sides blown completely out.
I'm glad that you have had success with your tractor and like I said not all 53 blocks are weak.
I just see it as an unnecessary risk to take.
It doesn't matter if you are building a two bedroom ranch house or a multi million dollar mansion, you should do it right and start with a good foundation.
On the other hand, if your existing foundation is cracked and leaking, and reinforcing and sealing it will get you by, then by all means do so.
