tire help November 02, 2012 06:30AM
I'm trying to figure out how much weight I need to shave off my tractor to change classes. I curently have 18.4x38s on steel and was hoping someone might be able to tell me how much more 24.5s would weigh and how much weight does alum save over steel? Thanks in advance for any help.

as a rule of thumb , when using or working with aluminum you will lose 1/3 the weight of steel, mainly because the aluminim is usually thicker so as to be as strong as steel, I know alot of people think you will lose huge amounts of weight , which can be done! the biggest hurdle is the cost & the limited shapes & sizes of aluminum readily available

I think that they are roughly 45 lbs per side, but I havent weighed one in quite a while. The lightest steel rims that I have ever had were 85 lbs total per side.

went from 20.8 38 0n 23" w light steel rims to 24.5 32 10 ply single cuts on whipstation wheels, if I remember right, the new wheels weighed about 360# each while the old ones dead ended the scales at 500# was able to carry2 and sometimes 3 more weights depending on the scale at trackside used that day and still be well under weight
