400/450Farmall IH GEARS SAME???? November 28, 2012 07:20AM
ARE THE RING AND PINION THE SAME ON THE 400 AND 450 FARMALL? ALSO IF CHANGING THE GEARS INTO A 560 FARMALL THE FOWARD GEARS 1-5 WILL THEY INTERCHANGE AND IF SO WILL IT SPEED UP THE TRANSMISSION? I KNOW THIS IS KINDA A LOADED QUESTION BUT WHAT IM WANTING TO DO IS SPPED UP QUITE A BIT WITHOUT HAVING TO GO TO CONSTANT MESH GEARS

560 IH STOCK REAR END
WANTING TO PUT 400/450 FARMALL RING AND PINION
CHANGE THE GEARS OUT OF A 450 OR 400 THE 1-5 GEARS TO SPEED UP

The 450 ring ang pinion will go in a 560 they bolt in no problem. yes they speed it up, don't remember the # of teeth on each, will have to look it up. I'm not sure if the 400 and 450 are the same.

The ring & pinion is the same in the 400 & 450. The gears 1-5 are the same in 400/450 & the 560. The 560 has two different gears in the 3d and the 4th gear. They make the same gear ratio gears as the 400/450 and they make a set of gears that are slower and IH called them a "heavy tillage" gear. The ring & pinion gears will interchange on the 400/450 & the 560 which is the easest way to speed up the rear end speed on the 560. The stock ring & pinion out of the 560 is 3.26 and the ring & pinion out of the 400/450 will change it to a 2.63, The main differents is the 400/450 is a straight cut gear and the 560 is a helical (bad spelling) cut gear and the pinion bearing is different but it does fit. What final gear ratio are you trying to get to?

I would like to put 4th in the 3rd gear ratio speed it up I'm looking for some cheaper ways other than constant mesh what out flipping the bottom shaft gears and the upper? I've heard that will help

If the 560 is like a 300/460 the top and bottom shafts are the same spline. I built a 300/460 tranny years ago by swapping the top & bottoms around and using some heavy tillage gears. Took some machining spacers and welding two gears together to make a slider set, but it worked. Has a stock 1st & reverse. Stock 4th, 2 teeth slower than 4th & 3 teeth faster than 4th. Deleted road gear and added a 460 utility R/P. I'm sure the same can be done on a 560.

I've ran some top & bottom gears flipped and you can develope some faster ratios and it involved some creative work. If you know what gear ratio are you trying to arrive at will help to determine if it is possible. I've had several different one's in mine from 30-1 & 25-1 to what is in it now which is 18-1/19-1&23/1. I assume you running the profield class in southern Mo or are you running something else? Kole give me a call if you want and we can talk about it. My number is on my profile page.
