JD 466 or 7.6? December 04, 2012 01:00PM
This is going to be redundant to alot of guys on here but i dont know alot about the differences between the 466 and 7.6, I know 55 series heads flow better but whats the difference in the 466 and 7.6 blocks or iron sets? is it like the BBJD where the 40 series had cam driven oil pumps and arent as good? When did the 466 come with the p pump was it after 55 series? Thanks in advance.

4840's had p-pumps in 1978. I think the 8430 may have had it first though in 1975. Every generation of block/ engine from Deere has been improved from the previous one, after all they have to stand more horsepower! The caveat to that is when you get new enough the blocks are no longer structural so they are much thinner and lighter than the older blocks. For most pullers it probably isn't an issue, but on tractors where the block is the frame like 4020-4960 it is possible you could break a non-structural block on a hard bounce since it holds the tractor together on them. Oh and yes there are cam and crank driven oil pump motors both. Biggest diffrence in the blocks besides bolt patterns are 6076 motors have a larger diameter camshaft.

Will a 55 series head bolt on a 40 and 50 series block? when did deere change from cam driven to crank driven oil in the small blocks? 40,50, or 55 series? Is there an advantage to buy a 7.6 block or an older block if you can bolt a 55 series head on either? thanks

crank driven oil pumps started in the late 40 series 466 and yes you can put a 55 series head on a 40 or 50 series block
