JD 8.1 Engine December 15, 2012 11:36PM
I have found a nearly new 8.1 engine. I'm told it is not a big deal to put a P pump on this. Anyone using this engine? What head do I use-8310 or 8410? Some other head? Thanks a bunch

I dont think I have ever seen an early 8.1L (pre high pressure common rail.) that had anything on it, but a P pump... (diesel anyways.) Some had the Electronic Governor, but it was still a P pump..
I have only seen 2 castings for the 8.1L... R122419 and R122492.. No idea on the differances.. if any..

I think, but I could be wrong, that we had a 7810 with the 8.1 that had a A-pump on it.

This is what it looks like. I'm kinda scared of a common rail system. Not a problem to stick a P pump on it but it would appear the head must go. Not trying to reinvent the wheel......should I just stay with the JD 466? Anybody made a decent engine out of one of these?

I'm not sure if you can put a p pump on a common rail 8.1 without a lot of machine work. The hole on the inside is way to small were the pump goes in and to thick for the timing gear if i remember right from the one's I have seen. I know for sure the 9.0 common rails are. At minimum you would have to drill and tap a hole in block to see your timing mark on the pump and get a different timing cover. I would call Phil at Riverside. I had a conversation with him about this some time back and he had not attempted to use a common rail block yet for some reason, and I believe it was because of the pump mounting, but not sure.

Awesome motor to go bigger cubes with. 540+ anyways. There is a reason that guy wants you to call him.

The 8.1 common rail will work with a P pump. Has big hole and 4 studs. Use 4430 timing cover. The 9.0 has a small shaft hole. Throw the head away. Working on one right now.

Yanmar.. I always asumed they were the same bolt pattern... never tried actually bolting the P-pump on there... (Good to know for sure.. thanks.) The 8.1L HPCR engines had the big hole in the block..

Like he said, chunk the head.. find an 8.1L Mechanical head or 55 head..

It might be cheaper to trade the engine for a Mechanical 8.1L engine.. I guess I read the orginal post wrong.. I thought you said and early 8.1L.. and it's an 8.1L above 200,000 SN#..

I know some of the builders have looked at the 9.0L block and have used the crank... but not sure why they haven't used it.. maybe too thin in places?? Its got some advantages... maybe an Alky motor because of the small pump mount??... The cam is moved away from the clyinders more than an 8.1, the added stroke, and factory roller cam..

Was going to use a 9.0. That is what we were told the engine was, we didn't see it. Called REI, he wanted to try one (9.0). Ended up to be a 8.1. I have to back track a bit. I'm not for sure the big hole is the right size and that the studs are in the right place. We are going to make it work. Our diesel shop said it will work.

Hole and bolt pattern is the same.
