How many do you need and how soon? I am going to be running off a batch of 9/16 in a couple weeks. A little over $20 a piece with nuts. 608-675-3325

Make sure you get rolled threads not turned threads.

You are so right Banker! Cut threads are clean and easy on a CNC lathe. Rolled threads are stronger especially if they are rolled after hardening. Cost for the thread rolls is a large factor though. I am looking to buy M12x1.75 rolls right now, the problem is they are almost $400 a set with 3 sets minimum. Kinda bites when you only have one order pending.

I was thinking more maybe cnc turned threads would be fine if you used ETD 150 or a prehard 4XXX something, but rolled threads are still the best.

Re: head studs December 25, 2012 10:04AM
Actually ETD150 is 150K PSI for strength. That is about 36 on the Rockwell C scale which puts it at the hardness of grade 8 bolts. 4140 PH is about 125K and equivalent to grade 5. Cut threads are 10 to 15% weaker than rolled threads of equivalent hardness. Good studs (for engine use) are 180K or higher for tensile strength and have the threads rolled after hardening and turning to size.

So who sells rolled thread head studs for a Deere??

Re: head studs December 31, 2012 09:36AM
I plan to roll out a bunch in about a week. SB or BB? All rolled thread, cut thread eats the nuts after a few uses and are weaker. Do you need any special lengths? 608 675 3325
