656 tractor / dt360 engine question January 26, 2013 11:08AM
One quick question.... Read lots of posts about guys swapping the dt360 navistar engines into these smaller frame tractors. I did everything that I had learned from the forum, but ran into a little set-back. Engine is bolted in. I am using a 400 series tractor front cover, so my front two holes need to be relocated. not a big deal. I cut 7/8th of an inch off both sides of the cover and modified the frame rails slightly. I went to bolt my front end on, and my bolster hits my engine dampner. The bolster is a factory 656 part, and the front dampner that I used was simply a new case IH replacement. It has provisions for two pulleys like the larger 400 series engines run. Do I need a 666 bolster to make things fit, or do I need to change my front balancer to a single v-belt dampner?......I dont even know if there is such a thing....

The bolster is the same, the 666 has a single v groove pulley on the 312..

Thats what I need to buy then... A single v-belt front pulley. Got a part number? Anyone have a single v front damper for a tractor?

312, 360, 414, 436 all take the same balancer with two belt grooves and the same part number. do you have the correct frame rails?

I made my own frame rails and they are correct length. Any difference in frame rail length and the sheetmetal wouldnt fit correctly. I must need a single v-belt front pulley system. Everything comes together pretty close. Just need to find another 1/2 inch or so for clearance. I will contact case ih this morning and get to the bottom of the dampner issue.

Front bolster cast number is 397478r1 on 686 with 312 and that engine has a double groove pulley
