engine swap April 01, 2011 04:29AM
Are there any newer style engine that will bolt into a 3020 JD. If you have a gasser and want to convert to diesel, I am wondering if I have to use the 3020 diesel engine or maybe a newer one might bolt in and give me a little more power.
Thanks

Not sure how "bolt in" it is but the 2510 used the newer series of engines and the rears should be the same. It may not gain u much power though. If you're willing to go a little more custom you should be able to use the 2510 engine plate, flywheel, clutch, and such to put a 329/359/414 in it. That would require custom side plates and hood.

The 276 or 4045 (4.5L) turbo engine would be nice to install but not sure how you can get by doing it. The 3010/3020 used the waterloo engine where the 2510/2520 used the dubuque engine. There has to be a difference in the bellhousing for it to work or an adapter plate. There was one of these done in a john deere book I have and it said they used an adapter plate but thats all it said.

Get a plate from a 4030, the 4030 uses a 3020 rear and a 300 series engine, I can get u the casting # if your serious.

Re: engine swap April 01, 2011 12:46PM
Crow, you mean the flywheel housing off a 4030? what engines does that allow you to bolt up? 329?

Re: engine swap April 01, 2011 12:59PM
All the 300 series engines use an adapter plate bolted to the engine, a 4030 plate will let you bolt a 329,359,414,and the later 4cyl engines to a 3010,3020,4010,4020, sorry Im not up on the 4cyl stuff but there are alot of 300 series 4 bangers

Yep. I know the 2520 used the same motor asa 2020, so any of those newer utility engines would be a nice swap into a 2510. I was trying to get a gasser 3020 with powershift and then put a bigger 4 cylinder like a 276 in it. the 3020 was always kind of a slug but, the newer utility engines make some pretty good power, especially if they are turbo'd.

Re: engine swap April 02, 2011 09:16AM
use a 239 like in a 2750/55 with turbo 90-100 hp easy and alot more common, hard to find the 2640 motor that balancer shafts bushings and block are not bad and if you do it will be pricy,i am putting 239 in a 2640 now that the original threw a rod, found good 239 out of aircompressor for 1200,all u need is the plate off 4030 with 329 or some 4040 with the 359 (harder to find)

Re: engine swap April 02, 2011 11:17PM
Did some years back when it was popular. Take a lot more than the back plate along with that you need a hub to change the crank bolt pattern and the front hydraulic pump craddle is also the mount for the front of the block to the side frames. If its a non structural block (4045 or 4039) it needs a sub frame and lots of work on the fan schroud and raditor. Through Deere we would send the frames, Raditor, pump drive etc to Tom Stillen Repair Shiocton Wisconsin and he would Modify the parts and bolt in the new engine. He also had a kit for the 4020 and also to put a Deere engine in the white and oliver tractors to replace the 310 Waukasha or the Perkins. Maybe someone on here knows if he still is around and has his phone number.

anyone that has tried to drop a 8.1 out of a9986 picker into a 3010 diesel?

Re: engine swap December 08, 2015 08:49AM
put a 7700 in a 3020 so it can be done

Re: engine swap April 03, 2011 03:19AM
JD 3020 why not put a 404 in it will bolt right up change fram rails and hood simple and alot more varations of hp.

Re: engine swap April 03, 2011 11:10AM
I never thought of that. I guess I would just have to change hood, frame rails and probably extend some lines. I would need a 4010 or 4020 gas tank, side shields too I think

Re: engine swap May 04, 2013 12:41PM
Find a 4045 and go to your local deere dealer and get backing plate, frame rails and injection pump linkages,it comes as a reman kit from deere but is pricey.

I Have a 329 diesel that was originally in a combine. We took it apart and appears to be good. Haven't cked the crank yet but I believe it is good. Purchased motor to rebuild and replace a motor in a 2740, then wound up trading tractor for skid steer. Motor is for sell. Also have a friend close by who has a gas 6600 gas combine he would sell or part out if this will help with swap. If interested call 573-819-6479. Located in Mo.
