looking for a good set of 429 pistons to build a 440, i would like to hear any info on building a 440 if anyone has done it, and if it is worth doing.

Another IH piston you may consider is one for an IH DVT573 engine, also a 4.5" bore, 1 5/8" wrist pin. You'll want to have custom sleeves made, not cheap by any means, but well worth it.

there is no real need for sleeves, just pull out the origional 407 sleeves and hone the block to fit and your good to go. I have one.

Yeah no need for sleeves.Your best bet would be to have custom pistons made to get your compression exactly what you want

1 5/8" wrist pin is the same as the 1456 "big pin" rods. DVT573's were in TD20C dozers, H90C, H90E, and 250C loader, and 270 or E270 payscrapers. Construction salvage will be your best bet, same for the DT429 pistons, the DT429 & DVT573 saw more use on the IH construction side of things. DVT573's may have been in a few older IH trucks too.

do any of you know where i can get 429 pistons i priced the piston and sleeve assem. new and they were 500 a hole and i ant spending that kind of money on just pistons, a good used set would do me just fine were just pulling hot farm with it.

what did that dvt 573 come out in and is 1 and 5/8 the same size piston pin as the 1456 rods.

Re: ih 407 to 440 February 13, 2013 03:32PM
yes you will need 1456 rods, 573 pistons would be the best , or as someone else says get custom pistons custon ones will cost 300 to 400 per hole, and a fairly long wait, in this sport every one tells you 6 to 8 weeks then delivers within a year, they are all nuts. I have every thing you would need, if you are interested. steel fly wheel forword.
