John deere slipping

Help
|
Ok so I have a john deere 4430 quad and it started slipping on the high side. I have the tractor split behind the motor right now. What do I need to do to fix it up. I'm running a 7.6l motor and my class is 466 3lm-466 3000rpm. |

How much horsepower will a stock 4430 clutch and 2 speed hold?? We would like to play in the speed limit classes , 8-10 mph. Just running the stock 404. |

300hp tops if its all in good shape and your pressures are 180+psi.Where are you located? I have built lots of Deere 2spd for pulling and they can easily hold over 1000hp reliably. They are cheaper to build before you burn them up slipping them, or totaly junk them. Heat can ruin parts pretty easy. |

Where are you located? I've never seen a quad handle 800 regularly let alone 1000 |

I am in Ky. At about 850hp the 4430 sized output shaft from the 2spd does become a weak link, but it can be upgraded. Then the countershaft and high pinion are a weak link at about the same power level. A well built quad will hold more than the stock 4430 rear will. I had a customer who dynoed over 1000hp make over 50 hooks last year with a built quad and a 7 disk wet clutch. Neither was touched all year. |

That is one of them, there are others. As to cost that depends on what you want and what you have that is useable. You could spend $1800-2000 on a 6 disk clutch. If your 2spd has good useable parts you would probably be about $1500 on that if its a 6 bolt carrier version. A 3 isn't worth building for extreme power but if 600hp is all you need it would be fine. So ultimately how much it costs depends on how much power you want it to hold. Both the clutch and 2spd can be built to hold more than a 4430 trans will. |

Im guessing around $600. I have the 6 bolt. What do you do to beef it up. |

Essentialy double the number of clutches in each pack to 5 and 7 . It requires some machine work and a different piston along with some diffrent springs and other mods. I also install better bolts that hold the carrier to the hub as that is a weak spot too. If all your hard parts are good and you have good clutches and steels in your 2spd I could build one for about a $1000. If like so many old tractors your manifold is worn where the seal rings go in it then it would take a lot more money as it has to be replaced. |

Is there a place where a guy can get the information to do it himself. I have been trying to build this thing myself. Thank you for all the information. |

No. You can do it the way I did it and burn up three trying to figure out the proper clearances and parts to use. Ultimately I think that will end up costing you alot more money. If you want to do it yourself you could build it just like an early sn4430 and it would probably hold 600hp ok. You will need all the parts from an early SN41800 and older two speed. It would not hold what the ones I build will, but it might get you by. If your housing is worn where the piston rings go though nothing you can do will make it hold on the high side. You really need someone who knows Deere 2spds well that can look over your stuff and make sure its good first, then you can build it to old 4430 specs yourself. |
