cryogenics useful on superfarm crank? February 26, 2013 05:20AM
Guys are cryo treating their 640 stroked cranks now for superfarm? Or is this old news? What is the advantage? Better wear? Stronger? I would think that they would be more prone to cracking, but I dont know. If there is a working advantage to doing this, who would do it first of all, and is it done after the crank is stroked and weighted, but before the finished sizes are done on the journals?

During quenching most medium carbon steels and low alloy steels undergo transformation to 100% Martensite at room temperature. However, high carbon and high alloy steels have retained Austenite at room temperature. Austenite is very brittle and can cause loss of strength, hardness, dimensional instability, or cracking. In Cryogenic treatment the Austenite becomes unstable at extremely low temperatures and the whole crystalline structure becomes Martensite.

Ok. Now that I am up to speed on the physics of metalurgy, I see what the process does. Where can I have my crank treated? I would prefer to find a reputable place that has done crank shafts before.

This page is a free service. The cost is covered out of my pocket. It takes a great deal of time and a fair amount of money to keep this website going. Donations for: photos, classified ads, forum discussion, etc... are appreciated.

Side Note: We are no longer accepting PayPal donations. They have changed their terms of service and stated they would fine PayPal users for spreading "misinformation" and "hate, violence, racial or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory". PayPal did not provide definitions for some of these vague terms. Woke corporate policies regarding "misinformation" could result in an automatic fine of $2,500 which would have been removed directly from the customer’s PayPal account. PayPal did backdown from some of their policies but quietly implemented portions of them in later terms of service. A financial institute has no right to monitor social media accounts or speech. This is unacceptable and I'll no longer do business with PayPal.
