12V to 24V 5.9 Cummins crankshaft compatability?? March 13, 2013 05:55AM
I am working on a late 24 valve 5.9 Cummins. I think it is a 2006 model year. It is the higher HP engine that has the factory made girdle assembly around the bottom of the block. The crankshaft is bad and neither the machine shop or the Cummins dealer can tell me if a 12 valve shaft will work or what the year parameters are. They say there are too many part numbers and variations. I dont want to buy into something that is not going to fit. Would be interested in good used crankshaft for this application if anyone has an extra, the closer to Nebraska the better. Thanks for the help. Jeff Gravert 308-940-0255

Journal sizes have not changed but here is an excerpt I read on the cranks.

The noticeable changes were on the snout and rear of the crankshaft. If you are replacing cranks, verify that you have the correct crankshaft, as some engines used a sensor ring. On some later ISB (24 valve) cranks there were two dowel holes on the rear of the crank.

They'll work if you make a couple modifications. I'm pretty sure a 06 will have the tone ring bolted to the front of the crank, and should be doweled in a certain location in relationship to #1 crank throw so the computer knows where TDC is. This dowel hole will need to be drilled. CR cranks had slightly larger counterweighs, no big deal there. Gear needs changed. It's been done many times.
