I am thinking about boring out my 301 and putting in chevy 366 pistons. Do I buy flat top pistons and which compression height do I go with? Or is there a better way to go on a low low budget. Thanks for any help you guys can give me !! |

to Jdihpuller, I had a 301 overbored with the 366 pistons we ran the engine natural asperated and had good luck with that combination, sold the short block to a puller who turbo charged the engine ran 60 lbs boost and split the block right down the middle! There may have been other factors like too much compression?? My experences with turboing these engines are limited, but thats my experence. Maybe redpuller460 can elaborate on this. We built several engines with these pistons had no other problems, they were all NA! |

Ok thanks for the info,i only get about 5-10 lbs of boost out of my charger. Will the 366 pistons work with the stock rods and wrist pins in the 301? And are there any valve clearance issues using the stock head with some mild cam work? |

my 2 cents
|
From my experiences around drag racing v8s, rpm's seeem to crack blocks more than the HP they make |

Jdihpuller, rod bushing removed and rod pin end needs to be bored. pin will be a press fit. thats how i have done it. always check valve to piston clearence, always. you shouldn't have any clearence problems, but check anyways. |

I have never put on together with a turbo. I have talked to guys who have done it though. It can be done if you have the money. They run them in llss. |

Can a 282 block be bored to 4 inch without the sleeves in it? |
Re: ih c301 gas engine

to sdangus. Any of that generation block, c263, 291, 301 or D282 I would recomend having the bores sonic checked for material thickness. I have found some of these blocks must of had core shifts at the foundry and are off 50/1000's from front to back. Maybe that doesn't seem like a big deal but when taking the bore out to max it can mean a thin cyl wall. Also sonic checking can insure there is no prositity in the casting. When boring them big thats the time to make the bores symetrical or the same spacing between bores. Your sonic testing will indicate thickness to allow you to do this. To answer your question I will have to look at my records of previous builds. off the top of my head im going to say no your going to be in the water jacket. On our D282 block we run over 4" bore in sleeves that are pressed in a deck plate. The sleeves are butted together and the block is hard blocked. I also recomend running a girdle. If your building a D282 NA high rpm motor and your interested in mine give me a call. My tractor is for sale but I would like to keep my drive train. I would be willing to sale the entire motor and fuel cell? call if interested 810 392 7123. |

What size charger and what type fuel system are you going to try.Maynot stay above turbo that long at only 3000 rpm limit. |

If you want a cheap easy to work with fuel system for gas turbo find a airplane junk yard nice fuel injection systems and suck through carb type systems most ran a to4 tubo |

Not sure yet on the turbo, maybe a t04 or something on that line. Gonna run a mechanical fuel injection, with a 2 stage system. |
