P-Pump on 4010 diesel block January 24, 2017 02:38AM
I'm building a Deere diesel for a class with a 380 cube limit with no decubing allowed. This leaves me with a 4010 diesel block.

Does anyone have suggestions for using a P Pump with this setup?

I've heard a few different things such as standing the pump up in the original spot, changing the front cover, etc.

Looking for suggestions or if anyone has ever done something like this before.

Thanks

I don't believe that you'd be able to change the front cover on the 4010 block. The cover is removable, however the backing plate is part of the cast block. If it was feasible, a hole would need to be cut in the front backing cover to insert the pump into the front gear set. Have you thought about running a performance rotary pump (with .450 or.500 head) located in the stock location? If built correctly and with the necessary precautions, they can output 380-450 cc of fuel. This would all depend on what your class horsepower range is.

4030 is 329ci

They don't make liners for a 4010 diesel any longer replacement liners will be 404 cube
I've heard of the guys discussing this problem and we're researching using a 4030 John Deere block
The pump is front mount rotary and can be machine to fit an a or p I think that is a 365 cube
not positive but might be a crossflow head Its worth investigating if you haven't already

you could have power bore make new sleeves and you may be able to make a plate like 4320 used.

5020,

I have looked into using that engine as well. It's 359 cubes and a cross flow head. You'd have to find a head from a specific year 9400 combine because that is the only one with a bolt on intake manifold from what I've been able to find.

My only concern, does it bolt right up to a 4010 bell housing or do you need an adapter?

Re: P-Pump on 4010 diesel block January 25, 2017 02:24AM
You need the rear engine plate off of a John Deere 4050 to put a 359 in a John Deere 4010.

4030 is 329 ci. I think 2950 is 359 non turbo and some 4050"s may have been 359 turbo but those engines won't bolt in a 4010, may want to find a 4030.

The 359 engine out of a 4050 will bolt up to a 4010!!!

Just curious where your pulling club is located and what class

Re: P-Pump on 4010 diesel block January 25, 2017 02:18PM
I pull with Illini State Pullers. We run across mostly northern IL and central Wisconsin. This tractor is for our 7000 NA SS class.

If your going to put a 329 or a 359 in a 4010, you will need a backing plate off of a Late John Deere 4050 with a 359 engine. The bell housing bolt pattern are the same on 4010 and 4050. The bell housing bolt pattern on the 3020 and 4030 are the same, but smaller than a 4010. Seems to me you have two choices, 1] use the original 380 cu. in. 4010 engine or 2] try to find a 4050 359 rear engine adapter plate and put the 359 in it..

Thanks allot for the info PULLMX.

Really thinking option #2 would be my best bet just to have the option of making a really nice cross-flow head.

Re: P-Pump on 4010 diesel block January 26, 2017 03:16AM
John Deere did make a Power Tech 6068 engine with cross flow head and a bolt on Intake manifold. That head will bolt onto a 359 block. Hope this helps.

look at the 4030 parts book and there you will find a surprising answer. This deere to deere is easy except for the 4020 to 5020 swap that is complicated

Re: P-Pump on 4010 diesel block January 25, 2017 02:21PM
I've been studying the 4030 parts book the last couple nights and must be missing something. Is there an adapter plate or are all of these bellhousings more in common than I realize?

Re: P-Pump on 4010 diesel block January 25, 2017 04:17PM
I worked for John Deere a long time and don't ever remember any back plates.. I have a friend that put a 329 into a 3020 chassis. Bolted right up. The bolt pattern on backs of JD engines hasn't changed for years.

I have the plate to put a 300 series into a 4010.... we went another direction ... also had a 4010 block with p pump .. if u need info

I think we are all curious for info on the backing plate and the Ppump 4010 if you don't mind sharing.

Are you sure it was a direct bolt up? The Dubuque engines have a bolt on backing plate on rear of engine. To put Dubuque engine in Waterloo tractor one would need backing plate off of a 2510/2520,4030,4050 with 359 engine. I put industrial engine (219) in a 2510 gas and 2510 plate had to be used between engine and bellhousing

Re: P-Pump on 4010 diesel block January 26, 2017 04:31AM
The backing plate used on the small clutch housing like the 2510/2520 is not the same plate as used on the 4030 and the late 4050 I have repowered several Waterloo Tractors with Dubuque engines and you will have to have the rear main seal housing/adaptor plate as used on the 4030 or late 4050. Then it bolts right up to The Waterloo 4010/4020/4430 etc clutch housing. DW
