new puller John deere 4010 March 29, 2013 10:59AM
Just got an old 4010 to build into a puller - a couple questions -

1. What is the casting number of the light axle housings?
2. When you put outboard brakes on can you just gut all of the internal brake parts?
3. What engine is best to start with for a light SS or limited pro?

Thanks for your time.

Just leave all the internal stuff take off the brake pedal set up n mount your master cylinders n run the line right to were the stock brake lines went.

I would also recommend leaving the original internal brakes and mounting master cylinders. The external brakes will not save that much weight and leaving the stock internal ones will save a lot of money. You should pull out all the brake pistons and install new orings compatible with brake fluid. Make sure to blow out all the oil passages because if any oil is left in the system it could make its way to your new master cylinders. The oil will swell the master cylinder seals and you will have to rebuild or replace them.

Suit yourself on the brake issue, but I would remove the internals and go with outboards. You would be amazed how much drag there is with the stock type internals. It isn't as much about weight savings as it is drag and response time. If you go with outboards, and if you use Engler calipers, go with 7/8" bore on the masters, 3/4" is just a little lazy.

Go with a 466. No replacement for cubic inches. I even have rods pistons and liners if you want to go alcohol,

What 466 should a guy start with? 7.6 or a 55 series? what number tractor or combine engine would be the best start? Thanks everyone for the help and opinions

I was also wondering what engine to start with

55 and newer would be fine to start with because they have the better flowing head and manifolds
