3000 rpm safety? April 28, 2013 08:07AM
If a open farm tractor is limited to a 3000 rpm is that tractor still safe? If the pump "sticks" could it still run wild? In my eyes I feel if a tractor is being modified for more power it should still have safety equipment such as steel flywheel, blanket tie bars. I do know that some pullers are lightened up for classes and therefore don't have the wieght allowance for some of the items like tie bars but I guess in my eyes that's no excuse. Looking for opinions so I can make some decisions thanks for reading.

Yes you are thinking correctly.

Im thinking the same as you, most have tip bars manditory, tie bars can be made pretty light but still effective, im staying with a cast flywheel but gonna put a 1/4-6 in steel band around the top + sides for just in case, if some are running thst close they cant allow for a couple hundred pounds they may want to rethink their stratergies

When you see one of these run road gear at 3,000 rpm, you'll understand why there needs to be steel clutch/flywheel and a scatter blanket. If you haven't seen one run road gear at 3,000 rpm, you eventually will.

I am confused by your statement. You can watch tractors run road gear or even a few teeth over at 3000rpms at almost any pull around here and I know there are tractors that are plenty hotter out there. I am not sure what you are trying to prove with that statement.

I know of several 3000 RPM tractors that have more than 1K HP. Think about that when putting on safety equipment.

And there are a few videos on youtube of clutch explosions

We pull 3 different farm stock classes & we are putting a steel fly wheel & scatter blanket in our tractors. We had already thought about it before Adam Biehls death but after that we decided that is was going to be a must. Safety first in my opinion. What's $1500 - $2000 for your life?

I think he is trying to say that cast flywheel is plenty hot and ready to explode at any time... I saw one explode in the 70's, don't ever want to see that again!
