Chevy 8.1

Has anyone used the 8.1 chevy in a performance application? I see there are carb intakes available for them now. They should make a good platform, and perhaps competetive price-wise to the 454. This would be for a street truck pulling trailer and occasionally a sled. |

Nobody has used the 8.1? Any thoughts on another forum where someone may have used one? |

I have a 2004 Chevy Avalanche 2500 with the 8.1. plenty of power keep up to diesel trucks hauling tractors. generaly haul 6k to 12k. 13-15 empty mpg and 10 to 12 loaded mpg |

These are pretty good motors for what they are designed. Most have cast cranks(there are steel ones), rods are a bit puny for performance, same bore and bore spacing as the 454 with a 4.37 stroke I believe. Head bolts are smaller than 454 and are one time torque to yield bolts(ARP offers aftermarket). Heads work great to .500 lift and will need much porting to be useful beyond that. I believe Dart makes or is to make replacement blocks. The 496 is no longer in production and is an all METRIC motor. The older BBC would be much easier and cheaper to use.
