IH stock 3rd gear May 20, 2013 10:10AM
How much horsepower would you trust a stock 31/42 third gear to hold up to? Would it work for say a light prostock? I'm just scared to risk it but maybe I'm not giving it enough credit either. Any thoughts?

I ruined one last year with a 466 and a 15mm rotary at 11000 pounds, I think I would spend the 500 dollars and buy a aftermarket one

better add the countershaft support bearing also,,it will bend, then you have a big mess on ur hands and you will be buying another 3rd gear set.. take heed my friend

Already have the bottom countershaft support. Just questioning the strength of a stock gear. I've chipped teeth off atlas gears in a super farm and always used a stock top gear for the direct drive coupling without any breakage and only had a 3 speed. Thinking about putting a gear in 3rd slot to have 4 speed, and if I do ill need a 31/42. Thanks for the help!
