8.3 Cummins Diesel Pulling Engine February 01, 2019 11:03PM
Over the years several pullers have built and may still use 8.3 L Diesel Cummins engines. Has anyone used this engine in Lgt Pro 540 cu. in. ? Were the engines successful? Just setting here in the arctic chill wondering if 8.3 L cummins engines ever made there mark in the Pulling World ? If i recall the cylinder heads didn't flow that well, but don't remember.

Lorenz/Wilkins/Wolfe had one in the Chance tractor that pulled with Full Pull Productions (540 A-pump class) for a little but I think they opted to go back to a 466 in it. It had a couple times it showed a little promise when it still had the Cummins in it. The tractor runs very well with the new motor now but I always like something different.

Now that I recall, Yantees had Crutchfield build a custom billet aluminum head for a 8.3 L cummins engine on Alcohol for the Light Super Stock. I think they had ran some Region Pulls with it, but not sure how everything worked out. Always wondered how well the block would hold up on an Alcohol version of the cummins 8.3 L ?

the second one in the video here (Ford 9600 hood) is based on an 8.3 Cummins

There is a couple that are pulling super farm class and one of them has a recast head on it which will fix the poor air flow problems. So it would be a good choice for a light pro.

It isn’t the engine that the famous B series is. But part of it, I believe is lack of hi-performance parts. That being said, I would imagine the guys out at Scheid or Haisley would still be able to help you get one running pretty well. I do believe that their heads don’t flow as much and their fuel delivery system sucks if you go with what came on them from the factory. I think it was a CAPS pump. But as patches said....there are a few strong runners out there. It’s easier to get a good running DT466 but it doesn’t mean a Cummins couldn’t compete if done right. Just gotta find the parts and someone with the know how.

The B-Series Cummins engines are the 5.9 L, and 6.7 L that are best known for powering Dodge Ram trucks.

The 8.3 L, I believe, falls in the C-Series.

Not all 8.3L Cummins C series engines used the CAPS pump. Many of them used the Bosch A, MW, P or P7100 pumps, and a few used Denso EP9's.

InjPumpEd...I learned something new today. Thanks for that info. Obviously from my screen name, I love me a Cummins. Actually thought about building a tractor with an 8.3 myself. Know that they are obviously not used as much as the B series. Figured you could switch out pumps but didn’t know some came that way. Thank you for the info. So if that’s the case, it sounds like the head is the “weak link” but if that’s addressed they should be a viable option. I know the Dark Horse Tractor from Wisconsin has got a great running tractor to show it’s possible, as patched mentioned earlier. I love Cummins and love Whites and Olivers so I would love to see more of them in the game.

White 160/185, 170/195 all had A pumps, Magnum 71(2)10-71(2)30 also A pumps, 7140 MW. 7150/7250 Denso EP9. 89 series also still had bosch pumps. The CAPS pump uses the p pump mounting pattern.

Great crank and block. Biggest issue I have with it is it uses button lifters instead of roller s. Have to move up to the 8.9 block for them.

How heavy is a 8.3 or 8.9 Cummins as compared to a 466 IH ?

Re: 8.3 Cummins Diesel Pulling Engine February 04, 2019 11:46AM
Does the 5.9 L and the 8.3 L cummins use the same bolt pattern on the rear engine plate?

Re: 8.3 Cummins Diesel Pulling Engine February 04, 2019 02:40PM
No they do not.

Re: 8.3 Cummins Diesel Pulling Engine February 04, 2019 12:03PM
8.9 blocks weighs right at 485 lbs.

Re: 8.3 Cummins Diesel Pulling Engine February 06, 2019 12:56AM
A complete take out 8.3 from a 1660 combine weighs 1600 a 466 ih from a 5488 with the heavy rear engine plate weighs 1550.
