Which john deere? July 15, 2013 12:17PM
Which john deere has the better platform to start with to build a puller?
Probably will run farm stock. 4020-4320 or 4040-4440?

build a IH and put deere tin on it

A 4430 or 4440 would work the best. A late model 4440 would be even better unless you have money to buy a very used 4455.

I would use a 4430. There super cheap to find. If your running farm or a hot farm set the perma up to a 4 disk. That will handle the power no problem and its cheap to do. Also the trans and axles same as 4020 so plenty of good used parts around that will fit and its a lot lighter than a 4440.

idea,
go with the 404? and not start with a 466? Ive heard rumors the 30 series were troublesome with trans and hydr.
I will be honest I,dont have any seat time on a quad range trans, are they similar to the older synchro? plenty of 4040 and 4240's
around here fairly cheap could they handle high hp?

Re: Which john deere? July 19, 2013 02:59AM
sorry I meant use the 4430 chassis. go find a 466 out of a combine or something. the 30 series had good trans. the only issue they had were the early ones had inboard shift and shifted hard. tranny wise there the same as a syncro one difference is quad has 2 speed in front of it. a 4040 still has the 404 in it. a 4240 is a non turbo 466. late 4430's, 4040, and 4240 are virtually identical tractors. only difference is engines

Idea, earlier you mentioned perma 4 disk?

Re: Which john deere? July 19, 2013 05:37AM
Search on here.. there is quite a bit of good info about building the multi disk Perma clutches, by welding the PTO and traction hubs together...

What class are you going to pull in??? If you ever plan to to a class that you will have to go to a dry clutch.. might as well start of with a dry clutch tractor.. (4020-4320)... but if you are going to running farm stock.. hot farm..( depending on the description of HOT farm class) the wet clutch will be good..

I say look down the road. If you invest for the future and plan on moving up as funds and time moves along you would be making a big mistake by starting with a Quad range tractor. If you have ideas on moving up start with a 4020 rear housing. You can put whatever sheet metal you want on it and will be able to have the transmission you will need ,and parts are a lot easier to find. Don't set yourself up to having a one off piece unless you have the cash to do it. buying used parts will be a lot easier to source when building and if in a pinch when it breaks down, will have less down time.

Re: Which john deere? July 19, 2013 12:58PM
it all depends on if you are going to stay under 850 hp. That is the limit on the quad range. If you stay under that you will be alright if everything is done right. 4040 works good they are light and pretty tough If you are planning on going bigger just go get a 4020 its a good starting point. Farm stock you cant beat that quad if you are going with a deer

Re: Which john deere? July 19, 2013 01:23PM
The plan is start in farm stock and progress to hot farm unless the funds are there then might jump all in to hot.
So should I be looking for another 4320? Ive noticed nobody has really suggested the 4440 that much,is it to heavy
parts still pricey? Any suggestion on a enhanced antique tractor? was thinking of setting up a 3020 for my son. Up here
in NH there are several different age rules for antique, some are 1960, others are 1965, and one club is 1970.

Will a 466 say out of a 4440 or 4450 drop right in a 4320? will there be clearance issues with the hood?

Re: Which john deere? July 23, 2013 02:56AM
I think I narrowed it down, On line poll, John deere 4320 or John deere 4440?
