IH 1586 July 24, 2013 01:39PM
Im curious, can this tractor make it into a 10,000lb weight class? Can the cab be removed? is there a better model for pulling farm stock?

you can make a 7 speed transmission so you can run gears that fit your hp and have another set that are ready to run when you build the big one for a little over a thousand more. saves tearing into it later. just an option for you to consider when your ready.

the 1066 or 1466 are both a better tractor to build the 15 is heavy. I do know of a 1566 pulling in the to hot to farm 12000 pound class. I think that the planitary rear end is way heavy and a weak point

Re: IH 1586 July 30, 2013 12:36PM
What are these tractors going for? I found a 1066 for 6k and it has a weak TA. Also found a 1466 black stripe w/o a cab and strong TA for 7k
Will a 466 fit in both of these?

Re: IH 1586 July 30, 2013 02:57PM
I would go with the 1066 cuz its lighter than the 1466 and yes 466 will bolt right in

Re: IH 1586 July 31, 2013 12:42PM
Right on! Thanks for the info. Any TA's out there that handle high hp?

Re: IH 1586 July 31, 2013 02:04PM
not sure what hp your looking for but i wouldnt bother with the ta, just delete it and save some money for hp

As someone that pulled a 1586 for several years I can tell you that while it is a good solid tractor you will have a lot of work to get one under 16000 lbs. If you want to go stock farm pulling it is not a bad choice but I will warn you you will have trouble getting it to be a top 3 tractor. The main problem with this tractor is that you only have three gear ranges to run in with a high/low option. The 1086, 1486, 1466, 1066, 966, 1206, 806 ect all have 4 gear ranges with a high/low. I just never to get it to run in the top 3 with the gears I had to pick from.

thanks,
I was in Pa this week and was able to see the size difference between the 1586 and a 1466. Im trying to build one that will stay under 10,000lbs.
up here our classes stay under 14,000lbs for most farm/hot farm classes.

1566/1586 tractors can easily be lightened up. I had one that ran 8200# supersock with two turbos under the hood and a cast nose. When I bought it, I easily peeled off another 500# by building a full length frame with rack and pinion steering, and ditched the aborted wd Allis wide front the previous hack artist installed. The next move was to remove the 300# worth of factory brakes. A pair of tophats and outboard calipers are the best option. If you are pulling farm stock, I would look into whether or not your club allows factory 10 bolt hubs as an option over cast centers, and a 806 wheatland rockshaft housing wouldnt hurt either.
