I've been spending all this time looking at 4240,4040's for a hot farm puller. Should I be looking at 4020 & 4320's?
I was assuming the 40 series where just stronger candidates. And the 466 would be easier to install, especially in the 4240 since it already has one, just with the smaller pump

come on two days and 228 people looking at this post,no one has an opinion? Your A john deere loyalist, you have a small amount of money set aside for the tractor and you want a good strong base to start building from and you want to stay newer than two cylinders and older than say 1980.... what would you be searching for?

look for a 4010 or a 4020. There are tons of those rearends going down the track and they hold up for almost any weight class and hp. put a 466 in and whatever hood you want.

Judging by all the past topics and posts you've had on here lately, you are waaaaaaaaaaayy over thinking this whole thing. Sounds to me that you want a small block Deere. Find a 4430 with a syncro trans, put a 7.6L in it with some good fuel and air (according to your local rules of course), make your clutch a 4 disk, and just like that, your blowin smoke and going fast with a pretty reliable beginner unit.

I was there with a 4430, that was quad ran very strong, 4440 quad gears Never had any issues with the quad its self but the shaft behind the quad broke twice, and the 5 disk wet clutch proved to be a challenge. I would recomend going 4020 back half and then you can uses what ever sbjd motor you want. By the time you get a wet clutch all set up with the valving andsfi clutch I think you would be better off to just start with the 4020 back half, If you are agressive with performance you will be there eventualy. Sorry for an spelling/ grammer

What class do you want to run? That has the most bearing on what tractor you should start with. If it is farm stock or open farm, limited rpm then a 4440. If it is super farm, limited pro or open rpm then a 4320 with what ever sheet metal you want.

Re: john deere 4020 September 12, 2013 12:39PM
The class up here would be hot farm which translate to 466ci max,3000rpm,p-pump max, 3x3 charger, no power enhancers(water injection) The cubic inch rule may change next year do to the 6030's.

Are you still pulling, Barncat? haven't seen you in a while,in Central New York.

Re: john deere 4020 September 12, 2013 12:44PM
ya think. I stopped pulling for a few years cuz of bs rules with antique club pulls. Now we are finally getting classes and tractors people actually want to watch.
So I am rusty as a son-of-a-b&*% on what tractor I should build, just trying to get the right candidate the first time.

I Know it! its getting even worse since the season is coming to an end,and its time to start wrenching. Found the tractors, have the money, trailers ready to go. I suppose I could put picures on the wall close my eyes and throw a dart! lol!

Two things if u go with a 4020u will be better suited for a clutch u can get a three disc at a goot price and it will hold great for a long time on the other hand a 4020 is very limited in space under the hood that's were the 4430 is great I am running a 4320 cause I wanted the older look if I had to do it again I would have put 4430 sheet metal on it
