Question for Ford pullers is there a difference between the rear end and trany on a 5000 and a 7000 and if so what is it ?

Re: ? For you Ford guys September 14, 2013 02:27AM
yes there is a difference, they may look the same on the outside but the 7000 rear end assy is made with stronger planetary gears and the ring and pinion are different too, the transmission also is different as differ versions where made in different years, depending on what your building on what you want.

A 7000 has some helicial cut gears and tapered bearings, a 5000 has straight cut gears and roller bearings in the transmission the rears are the same.

The taper bearings can put a lot of pressure on the cone and push the cone out causing transmission to pop out of gear.
I had this happen I put a new snap ring in and Loctite bearing retaining compound and its been ok since.

So which one is the best to use. Is the 5000 heavy enough to hold up under stress?

Will the 5000 rear end handle a 466 class either open rpm 3x4 or limited rpm at 9000lbs?

Yes.

I would use a 5000 trans and I would install a set of half gears than I would change the ring and pinion to match your horsepower so that you are running either 8th and 8 and a half and it will last pretty good. The slow ring gear and pinions are getting hard to find though,
