Ok. lay it on me, What is needling the rear end refer too? And what are the benefits? Im guessing it is replacing the oem bearing and race with a needle cage bearing?

Close, but not quite. It refers to installing needle bearings in the differential and other places where, if not installed, the gear will weld itself to the housing due to too much pressure and speed. Some don't believe in it and then they figure out exactly where the needle bearings need to go. It also helps the vehicle go straighter.

Its replacing the cast cross with a billet cross that has needle bearings under the spider gears. it not the extra speed and stress will gauld the gear to the cross and than you will have real problems. there is other things that can be done to free everything up but you get point.

Here's a link to an that Allen Ulmer posted in the ad section.. with pictures.. you can see where they cut down the shaft for the needle bearings.

Here are the 4 steps or stages of bearings that can be done to a JD rear. Engler can do as little or much as you want and is very knowledgeable.

1 is the cross like mentioned above. Without it you will probably be ok for a while, but at some point you will one wheel & gall them up. Then you essentially have your diff lock on all the time.

2 is to needle the sides of the planetary gears. Even thought they are straight cut gears you will eventually wear thru the steel shim & start wearing into the carrier. This also frees everything up and you will notice that you can push it around the shop easier.

3 is to needle behind the differential side gears with a Torrington bearing. It's probably a good idea to at least put a brass washer in to keep it from galling. Needles will help when you have to get on a brake.

4 is to put a bearing behind the pinion gear that you needled the bore in Step 1. A brass washer is probably a good idea at a minimum. Some think that needles here frees it up to much and it will spin out one wheel if you hit a spot on the track where one wheel has bite and the other does not.
