Newbie question about transmissions August 16, 2021 01:35PM
Hi, new to puling here

In a big power tractor/truck, can you shift a 3 or 5 speed on the fly or you just set it before the pull (based on the track/weather conditions, I guess) and stay with it?

Thanks

Thanks for your interest in pulling! We just pick the gear that we believe will work best on any given track on that given time and go with it. I don't know of anyone that shifts on the fly other than speed limit pullers or farm stockers that still have power shifts and torque amplifiers. Hope this helps you out! Enjoy the pulls!

Thank you!

How big are the chargers in a triple and quad-turbo Super Stock Diesel tractor these days?

Top running ones are all 4.5" and larger.

Those are the atmospheric, right? What about the middle and manifold turbos?

4.5 on the manifold, mid 5s intermediate, and 6s for atmos. The compounding keeps them well within their maps and they aren't being driven as hard as they would be on a Pro where one has to do it all.
