bull gears October 22, 2013 04:28AM
I've heard I could save a lot of weight by having the bull gears machined. My question is how much weight? How much can you safely take off? Is it worth the expense to do this?

In talking with Allen Ulmer he told me you can usually expect 50% weight loss. Costs usually run $700 to 800 for the pair.

Every set I've done we have gotten 50% off. Example IH 706 run right around 90lbs per bull gear and I can get them right around 45lbs. I charge $600.

What is involved in lighting a bull gear

Re: bull gears October 22, 2013 08:00AM
Remove material out of the center making it thinner and leaving the splines and teeth alone.

Thanks for the good information I appreciate that but I have a few more questions. Do you feel lightened gears would hold up to 6500lbs with 24.5s or am I asking for trouble? Also maybe this is a really dumb question but is there any performance gains by reducing rotating mass?

Re: bull gears October 22, 2013 10:41AM
No dumb questions. They would hold up fine as long as it is a one piece gear. (Not a gear with a cast center and teeth rivited on). Have done bull gears for 8000lb diesel supers. Any time you can reduse rotating mass you are going free up some rpm to the tires. Would you notice a difference? I don't think enough to run a higher gear. If you have any other questions feel free to call. Nick

what can be done to the bull gears like on a 560 where the center is rivited on? any weight to be lost on those type?

Re: bull gears October 23, 2013 05:37AM
Some can be lost on a 560 bull gear by drilling holes between the rivets. I've never done a set because I'm not sure it would be worth it. Maybe someone has them is a llss or a lss but I wouldn't run them in anything over antique type stuff.

Thanks for the info I will get a hold of you sometime after the first of the year to do a set for me.

Sounds great, look forward to hearing from you. Nick
