1970s Avenger Photo search

I have been looking for photos of my dad at tractor pulls. No success, hoping someone here can help.
Don (or Donald) Neukomm pulled in the mid 70s, the tractor was gold and called the Avenger. He was at 1975 Illinois State Fair. Also pulled in Indiana and Kentucky. He only has one photo of the tractor :-( |

May have some in old trunk that I need to look through and scan. I do remember him with single engine and later a twin engine Hot Rod that he sold to someone in Monmouth, Il. He was from Northeastern Illinois, not to far South of Chicago right? |

That would be fantastic! I'm not sure who it was sold to. Winner's Circle sponsored him. Most of our family is still just about an hour and half south of Chicago so you are remembering correctly ;-)
I would so love to surprise him with a Christmas gift with a photo of it on it. |

That picture sure looks like it could've been at Rushville, IL. Compare it to this one taken by Rodney Crum's assistant in 2011 for reference:
The wooden box seat chairs are the same, the grandstand downspouts, & the angle of the shadows. The trees are different, but that can be expected in 35 years. |

A bunch of grandstands at county fairgrounds in IL. must have been built using same plans. Looks just like Mercer County. Does any one have pictures of John McManus from Taylor Ridge |

I need to get more scanned. Camera quality was not so good those days. Attended a lot of pulls with no camera???? Wish I had more pictures but in those days I spent more time swinging weights or watching track conditions. |

I thought I remembered his tractor being named "GoldenRod". Maybe I'm thinking of someone else. Tough tractor in it's day. Saw him put a whoopin' on a pretty good class in Golden, Il. many years ago. |

My mom said the name Avenger was on it, but never really stuck so maybe it had another nickname.
These are great and I would love to find more. |

The stand out memory I have of Don was the Illinois State Fair. Not sure what weight class. They were pulling on the grandstand side. Anyone that has ever been to a pull there knows what that track was like, no one could hold their tractors from pulling right toward the grandstand. Midway through the class Don spotted the sled up next to the grandstand and make a picture perfect pull straight down track for the winning distance. No one else could duplicate his example. I will "never forget" that ability to read the track and make your tractor fit the conditions. |

I remember Don Neukomm coming to the pull at Sullivan Indiana for several years in a row back in the early to mid 70's. The photos posted remind me of his tractor, but I thought in the years I saw him pull (including some pulls in Illinois) he had a blown and Hilborn injected (old four port with a 14" air cleaner and dual filters attached) 482 Chevy. I could be wrong as it's been close to 40 years ago now. I hope there are some more photos out there, I love seeing these old photos of early modifieds. It takes me back to the time when pulling was fun and practically anyone could afford to.

The man from Monmouth, Illinois that bought the tractor from Don Neukomm named it Goldenrod. |

Did Lonnie Frieden buy it? |

Yes, I think you are right. His previous tractor, an F-30, had Lonnie's Texico on it. |

Larry Mitchell(Cameron, IL) bought the tractor and named it Goldenrod. He still has the frame on his farm. He pulled tractors with Lonnie Frieden. Lonnie had Super Rat and Larry had Miss Super Rat, Goldenrod and Silver Streak. |
