Back plate for IH 466 into a 560 January 22, 2014 04:11AM
I thought i had a source for this but he said he was out and not making anymore. Im hunting for a back plate for a IH 560 for the 466 swap. The one that is the stock 560 thickness. Im trying to use a stock 986 flywheel without using a spacer. Any leads would help. Thanks

Stock 560's are .375 (3/8).

Might be a heck of a trick to make a rear engine plate that thin. It will have to be made with a step for sure. You need a minimum of 1 " around the crank for the rear seal and pan rail to bolt up correctly.

Floyd Isbel had them and Leaman's have them. Floyd is out of them and not sure he is going to make anymore. And waiting on a reply from Leamans. I know the deal with the rear engine seal. If you see there plates you will see what they done. Its really neat looking plate. The first time i done this swap, i used the stock cast plate off of large frame tractor. Just trying to keep from running spacer from behind flywheel. I may have to go to a custom flywheel but try this direction first.

I've done this swap too, with a 986 flywheel (machined for 560 ring gear) and a 400 series factory rear plate. The spacer for the flywheel needs to be 1.5", which is thicker than the rear plate. What this means is the plate would have to be thinner than zero to not use a spacer with a factory flywheel, unless you use a custom input shaft and throwout setup.

The spacer i used was 7/8' thick. 986 flywheel, 986 back plate, 7/8" spacer and a 1066 starter. The flywhell does need a 560 diesel ring gear. Everything works pretty slick. I dont understand why you needed 1.500" spacer? Unless using 560 starter needs that big of a spacer. 1066 starter works with a 560 diesel not gas ring gear.

With a 7/8 spacer the clutch and starter needed another 5.8" to match up as factory. I've sold several of these spacers for the same swap. I bought the 7/8 spacer from Floyd, and called him when it didn't work. He said "yeah, you need to get a custom input, eliminate the hydraulics, etc etc. Not what I wanted to do, so I solved the problem.

Correction- The starter lined up (with the 560 ring gear in the 986 location) but the input shaft didn't make it to the input bearing. I sunk the gear another 5/8, and spaced the flywheel 1.5", and it worked great.

Can't say I would use astock flywheel or clutch in any pulling aplication. I believe there was a large fund raiser last weekend as a result of stock clutch/flywheel

Mine's not a puller, and has a stock N/A 414.

It will not be turning anymore than 2600 rpm. That is stock rpm for flywheel. That is the reason im not wanting to use a spacer.
