466 search February 02, 2014 01:22PM
Looking at motors for my 4430. Found a 466 out of a road grader. The year is 1992 and the model is 850 i think. Will this bolt to my housing? This one appears to be P pumped. Are there 466's that wont bolt up? I see some listed as long blocks. I was under the impression that all 466's were short blocks?

Re: 466 search February 02, 2014 03:35PM
Long block means with head
Short block is minus head

Re: 466 search February 03, 2014 01:44AM
I'm assuming you have short/long block confused with little/big block. That's okay, everybody has to learn the lingo. You learn by asking. Don't get discouraged if somebody on here jumps on you. We all started somewhere.

Re: 466 search February 03, 2014 02:28AM
to answer your question... yes it will fit. not sure what the 850 means. the worst you'll have to do is drill a few holes in your frame rails, three will fit by just opening them up to 3/4". don't be afraid to buy it if it's a good deal, we'll help you thru

Re: 466 search February 03, 2014 03:20AM
4.1 puller added info i probably should have as well to my post. sorry if i confused you but that is where the long/short block comes from. meaning you can buy it with head or without.

Ask them for the information on of the engine Serial tag.. If its a 1992, it most likely an early 7.6L engine.. (466) but should have the good head that most are looking for.. (everyone calls the 55 Series head.)
Need the model number off the tag..
Not sure about the 850 grader info...

Re: 466 search February 03, 2014 08:23AM
JDGnut is on the right track. Take the engine serial number. It will be on the block, should be on valve cover tag or on on the block some where. Should be an RW number. You can go to a local Deere dealer and they should be able to give you the build codes for that motor. If your local dealer is reluctant to give you that info, post the number on here and if I see it, I will look it up and post back.

block out of 772a grader is marked r71685 or r71689 or r71688 or r78505 is the same as a850B crawler this block is also used in 4650 4850 big bolt holes

Re: 466 search February 03, 2014 10:12AM
Fella's i know the head no head. I was referencing how some industrial engines are longer due to larger water jackets between the cylinders, wasnt sure that applied here.i have the info everyone is looking for reguarding the block.....i hope. JD 6466A engine number 6466AT014 was originally in a 1992 model 892D LC. It appears to have a p-pump. Hope this helps,, trying to find the best motor and price. Thanks

First time that I've heard of that one

Re: 466 search February 03, 2014 10:33AM
Lets have a look at those pump numbers.

Re: 466 search February 11, 2014 01:16PM
Found a couple 6076's out of combines look to have p pumps. Anyone have any insight? looking to install into a 4430. Should i be looking for ones without a oil cooler. Will i run into wiring issues as these are later model engines. One is out of an 4850

Re: 466 search February 12, 2014 02:47AM
The 4850 engine will work... (still a 6466 engine) I'm guessing the question on the 6076 engine.. is the later block with the oil cooler that is larger and is mounted vertical and a little futher back, instead of the one thats in the middle of the block that is mounted horizontal. Either will work.. the engine that had the larger oil cooler was used as a non structural block.. (not used to support the tractor) but mounted on top of a frame. But for what you are doing it wont make a differance..
The earlier 7.6L are the ones most are looking for.. and the R86427 head used on the 6076 is the most wanted (Everyone calls the 55 series head). I think there are two different castings for the 55 series heads, both are good.. the 8.1L head is also good for what you are doing..

Wiring wont be an issue.. the later engines will have the water pump driven off of the gear set on the front of the engine.. The tach drive will be missing..

Re: 466 search February 12, 2014 08:37AM
Yes, my concern would be the fitment to the housing and width of block to the frame rails. Why are the ealier blocks the ones that everyone desires? On the 6076 say out of a combine, is there a shaft difference on the fly wheel side compared to a tractor mount, since its mounted in a different manner

Re: 466 search February 12, 2014 09:12AM
The early 7.6L blocks were stronger, because they were designed to hold up a tractor because they were part of the frame.. that later just sat on top of the frame.. The later ones a little lighter.. Mounting won't be an issue.. the only mounting issue will be the bolt holes on the front set.. some where a little further apart.. I thought I knew which ones were in what.. but other posted have said other wise.. it will depend on which side frames you are going to use.. I think you'll be OK with the 4430 frames.. if not.. its just a mater of cutting out the front mount and making a plate and welding in another..
as far as the drives go.. crank is the same.. You'll use the flywheel for the perma clutch..

Re: 466 search February 13, 2014 09:42AM
What about 8.1's. better? Do they fit?

Re: 466 search February 15, 2014 07:55AM
8.1 will fit anywhere a 466 will

Re: 466 search February 14, 2014 11:59AM
I have a late 466 out of a 4640 with a crank driven oil pump. 319-350-2137

Re: 466 search February 16, 2014 05:14AM
The oil pan bolt pattern is different on a 7.6. The two bottom holes are the only ones that will line up. This is the bolts going back to the bell housing I am referring to.

Re: 466 search February 16, 2014 09:16AM
Will i different oil pan correct the problem?
