Ford 401 to 540??? March 19, 2009 02:02PM
Can a 401ci ford be made into 540ci if so what parts, what would the bore and stroke be and what would it cost. The class requires the tractor maintain the stock block. Thanks

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? March 19, 2009 03:11PM
I think you could take it to 536 if you can go no bigger than 540 .

What parts would i need? how makes them? and what would it cost? Thanks for any info

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? March 21, 2009 11:47AM
truck crank 5.2 stroke and a bore of 4.6875 or 4 11/16 will give you 538.4285 CI you will have to put a sleeve in. all the alky engines have a 4.625 bore sleeve to give them 505 with a 5 inch crank. this is a safe engine to build and stay togather.

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? March 21, 2009 12:17PM
yes a 5.2 strock with 4.625 bore will give you 536 and I dont think you would have to sleeve it .

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? March 21, 2009 03:59PM
5.2 and 4.625 will only get you 524, however there is nothing in a 401 block to catch the bottom of a wet sleeve so a 4.5 bore is about max and that would leave you with a 5.6inch stroke to get to 540. The next problem is gettig a super short piston to to keep from popping out the top, also the oil pump is going to be in the way and you will have to notch the block to swing the pistons. You could cut down the bellcranks with a 5.6 crank and use John deere 359 rods and go with a 4.5 cat piston but the rod angle is going to be horrid due to the short jd rod and the long stoke. It would proably be the cheapest to buy an old 5000 and update the sheet metal to 8010 then you will have an engine that you can get to 540 fairly easy.

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? March 22, 2009 01:18AM
Curts Idea is the best make and 8010 use a 456 block. Abort the 401 idea to costly to go over 480 cid in them. with the 456 block you can make 510 fairly inexpensive with 5.2 crank with cut weights and 4.56 jd pistons I have the whole set up almost ready to bolt together would sell as a short block assembled with cam for your application for $5500.00

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? March 22, 2009 03:44AM
how big can you make the 456 block running in a no turbo class (650 cube limit) ??????

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? March 22, 2009 11:25AM
Havent looked at using a 456 I have a 474 block out to 607 N.A. It could go bigger there is a 637 in my SuperFarm.

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? March 22, 2009 01:51PM
where is a good place to buy a 456 and about what will it cost ? 456 sounds like the best engine to start with instead of putting money into 401 . am I correct? thank you

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? March 23, 2009 08:31AM
how much would 474 be also what would it cost to make 474 into 540 ? Would I save much money putting the 474 with all extra work to install{8000} vs 456? which way would others go? thank you

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? March 23, 2009 08:37AM
which 456 and 474 are best {hp and simplist} to install in 8000?

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? March 23, 2009 10:04AM
456 way easier to put in 8000 blots in with minor mods not like 474 to hard to keep stock. GO 456
!!!

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? March 23, 2009 12:11PM

I hope this is a good game plan? other ideas more than welcome. thanks 2 teenage sons good family project

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? March 27, 2009 12:58AM
I have the ole Blue Bye U Ford TM 175. I am redoing the entire look of the tractor wont look any thing like the old one.
Adding a Genesis head is your best bet to liven up that 401. I am not going to claim I have all the answers but good suggestions.
Go for a 456 head that has been ported a simms pump from wimer diesel in sandy lake PA. and injectors with .096 lines with a Holeset H2 perched up on top with all that you might need some water to keep the EGT's down. No I have not figured out how to make my pictures fit the size on here yet. Angry

FORD TRACTOR PULLER WILL THE 474 HEAD WORK ON A 401? WHAT IS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 456 AND 474 HEAD THANKS

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? April 01, 2009 12:04AM
Yes the 474 head will work on a 401 with the right head gasket I am not for sure witch on I think the truck one. But Curt Forrester Would know for sure. The one slight problem is if the 401 your putting it on has 1/2 head bolts the 2 centering dowels on the corners are larger on the 474 head and need to be turned down to fit the 401 block not a real problem. Winking The 456 head from what I understand will flow better than a 474 in bores smaller than 4.5 once over 4.5 the 474 has wider valve spacing to make putting larger valves in easier.

Re: Ford 401 to 540??? April 01, 2009 01:50PM
what is a reasonable price for a 456 stock head, price for a ported .polished, valvesand springs etc. I'm starting to think maybe better [cheaper] to install 474and build new frontend? 456 motors alot more money . opinions welcome thanks
