boring JD 404 to 466 April 25, 2014 05:09AM
I've got a 404 out of a 4430 and i've found a machinist that can bore it out to 466 specs. If i buy a 466 engine overhaul kit for the 40 series JD will that work? Has anyone tried this before any information would be a big help. Thanks in advance. Hoping to install it in a 4020 any knowledge on this would be great!

You can bore a 404 to 466 but you will not be able to use john deere sleeves. The deere sleeves use sealing o-rings that are located in grooves in the block, the sleeves you will need have o-ring grooves cut in the sleeve. Call Phil at riverside, he will be able to give you all the info you need.

I have done a few of these and we used Darton sleeves with no o rings on the bottom. When you bore the block to 466 specs, the original oring grooves in the bottom of the block will be gone. I just machined the bottom of the block .001" smaller than the bottom of the sleeve and put sealer around the bottom of the sleeve and then pressed them in. They never leaked water. This was for a puller so I am not sure how this would hold up if you wanted to farm with it.

I think the only 40 series to have the same size wristpin as the 4430 is the 4240. Anything bigger will have bigger wristpins. I believe if you make the sleeves pressfit, you could use the jd sleeves but if I were going to the trouble of boring the block, I would use aftermarket sleeves and make the bore 4 3/4" instead of 4 9/16" like a 466. These 4 3/4 sleeves would fit right in after opening the block to 466 specs.

Would be cheaper to just use a 466 block

I'm not sure if it will be cheaper. I live in Georgia no junk yards and not much farming. I have checked with all the junk yards in neighboring states and the cheapest JD 466 engine I've found was 4 thousands and that's not including the cost to go get it or having it shipped. As I stated I already have the 404 just checking all my options before diving in. I will definitely take the best and most reliable option. Thanks for all the help!

There's a 466 short block on the forsale page, and includes a clutch.. I don't know anything about it, but it would be worth a call...

What is your plan for the 4020? The 404 can be made to put out some nice power levels. Personally i start with a 466, lot of options with a 466. Keep searching ive seen short blocks out there for cheap money. Some blocks are stronger than others, search the forums under jdsb and you will see some of the disscussions that have taken place over the last year regarding 466 john deeres.
